Men’s basketball downed by Carnegie Mellon in UAA Challenge, 87-73

Morgan ’25 netted a career-high 30 points for the Continentals

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Carnegie Mellon University's Justin Allen scored 25 points and the Tartans posted an 87-73 win against the Hamilton College Continentals in the University Athletic Association Challenge at Middlebury College's Pepin Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 2. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (2-4 overall) dropped its third straight contest. 
  • Carnegie Mellon (7-1), which is a member of the University Athletic Association, won its fourth consecutive game. 
How It Happened
  • The Continentals led 68-65 after a 3-pointer by Cooper Xu '25 with 9:24 left, but the Tartans took the lead for good with an 8-0 run during the next 2 minutes, 39 seconds.
  • Hank Morgan '25 attempted to shift the momentum back to Hamilton with a 3-pointer that slashed Hamilton's deficit to two points at 73-71. 
  • After a made shot in the lane by Jalen Reese '27 pulled the Continentals within two again at 75-73 with 3:43 remaining, Carnegie Mellon buckled down and closed out the game with 12 straight points. The Tartans went 5-for-5 at the line down the stretch. 
  • Trailing 49-42 early in the second half, Morgan hit a pair of shots from 3-point territory that drew Hamilton within one. 
  • Hamilton jumped out to a 6-0 lead on baskets by Reese, Morgan and Teja Singh '25, but Carnegie Mellon evened the score with the next six points. 
  • The score was knotted at 38-38 for the sixth tie of the half and the Tartans used four free throws and a 3-pointer for a 45-39 edge heading into the break. 
  • Neither team led by more than six points during the opening 20 minutes.
  • The Tartans tallied 26 bench points to the Continentals' 11. 
  • The contest featured 13 lead changes and 10 ties. 
  • Hamilton shot 42.4 percent (28-66) from the floor, including 25.8 percent (8-31) from the 3-point line, and 9-for-13 at the charity stripe. 
  • Carnegie Mellon held a 39-32 advantage on the glass. 
  • The Tartans shot 47.4 percent (27-57) from the field, including 10 of 18 from beyond the arc, and went 23-for-27 (85.2 percent) at the line.   
Notes
  • Morgan finished with a career-high 30 points after he shot 10 of 17 from the field including 5 of 10 from 3-point land. He added six rebounds. 
  • Morgan's 30-point output is the first by the Continentals since Kena Gilmour '20 scored 33 against Trinity College on Feb. 15, 2020.
  • Keyhani tallied 18 points and is averaging 15.2 per game. 
  • Reese added six points and three blocked shots.
  • Singh contributed six points and tied a career high with six assists. 
  • Owen Kane '25 collected a career-best four steals and tied a career high with five assists. 
  • R.J. Holmes had 17 points and seven rebounds for Carnegie Mellon.  
  • Buckley DeJardin chipped in 12 points and Aidan Murphy and Jack Stone dropped in 10 apiece off the bench.

Hamilton plays University of Rochester (3-3) in the UAA Challenge at Middlebury on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m.
