Volleyball season concludes in NESCAC championship first round

Carman ’24 tallied 15 kills for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Bowdoin College's Skye LaMendola recorded 19 kills and the Polar Bears posted a 3-1 win (25-17, 15-25, 25-19, 25-11) against the Hamilton College Continentals in a 2023 NESCAC Volleyball Championship first round match at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday, Nov. 3. 
 
How It Happened
  • Trailing 11-6 in the opening set, Bowdoin scored the next four points and pulled within a point. The Polar Bears took a 17-15 lead after another four-point spurt. The Continentals scored the next two points and drew even, but Bowdoin closed out the set with an 8-0 run. 
  • Bowdoin held its final lead of the second set at 11-10 before the Continentals ran off the next three points. Hamilton extended its advantage to eight points at 21-13 after a 7-0 run. The Polar Bears tallied the next two points, but the Continentals clinched the set on kills by Kendall Scholz '27, Drew Stimson '25 (two) and Elodie McGeiver '27. 
  • Bowdoin scored the first three points and led the entire third set. Hamilton was still within two points at 12-10 before the Polar Bears pulled away with a 7-2 spurt. Hamilton cut its deficit to four points at 20-16 on two Bowdoin errors and a kill by Scholz, but that was as close as the Continentals could get. 
  • The Polar Bears jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the fourth set and added to it with a 4-0 run for a 14-5 cushion. Bowdoin ran off six straight points for its largest advantage of 14 points at 20-6. The Polar Bears eventually clinched the match on a Hamilton attack error.  
  • Bowdoin posted a .308 hitting percentage with 58 kills. 
Notes
  • The Continentals hosted a NESCAC volleyball postseason event for the first time.
  • Kate Carman '24 reached double digits in kills for the 15th time this season with a team-high 15. She is fourth in the conference with 3.56 per set.
  • Caitlin Allen '27 collected a team-high five blocks and is fourth in the NESCAC with 0.95 per set. 
  • McGeiver chipped in eight kills and three blocks. 
  • Melissa Morelli '24 dished out 36 assists and is third in the NESCAC with 8.36 per set. 
  • Rylee Bergeron '26 led Hamilton with 18 digs and is sixth in the conference with 4.64 per set. 
  • Lauren Lange added 11 kills, three aces and two blocks for the Polar Bears. 
  • Ella Haugen paced Bowdoin with 48 assists and Maya White was credited with 13 digs.  
Season Recap
Hamilton concluded the 2023 season with a 10-10 overall record. The Continentals finished in seventh place in the conference standings with a 4-6 record, and they were the No. 7 seed for the championship.
