Men’s soccer downed by Conn. College in extra time in NESCAC quarters

Continentals forced overtime with a goal in the 88th minute

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Connecticut College's Elliot Spatz and Gavin Mpiana connected for goals in overtime and the Camels defeated the Hamilton College Continentals 3-1 in a 2023 NESCAC Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinal at Conn. College's Tempel Green on Saturday, Oct. 28.
 
How It Happened
  • Nationally ranked No. 7 Conn. College took the lead in the 34th minute with a goal by Spatz on a feed from Jorge Mendo. 
  • With time quickly running out in regulation, Hamilton earned its 12th corner kick. Luke Ehrenfreund '25 chipped a beautiful ball toward the back post and Luke Peplowski '25 sent a hard shot that ricocheted off a defender and into the net with 2:03 left. 
  • Ross Eagle '26 nearly gave Hamilton the lead in the 96th minute but Peter Silvester made the save. 
  • The Camels broke the tie less than a minute later after Matt Quiros-Newton sent a pass to the front of the goal for Spatz to tap in. 
  • The Camels added an insurance goal in the 107th minute when Mpiana beat Kai Haesslein '24 to the ball on a pass from Spatz.   
  • Conn. College outshot Hamilton 17-15 with eight on goal. 
  • Hamilton owned a 14-4 advantage on corner kicks.
  • The match was physical as the teams combined for 38 fouls. The Camels received one yellow card while Hamilton was given three.  
Notes
  • Conn. College earned the No. 3 seed for the championship after finishing the season with 20 points and a 5-0-5 NESCAC record. 
  • Peplowski tallied a team-high four shots. 
  • Haesslein registered five saves for Hamilton.  
  • Spatz tallied two goals and one assist for the Camels. 
  • Silvester made half of his four saves in the second half.  
Season Recap
Hamilton completed the 2023 campaign with a 6-5-5 record. The Continentals finished in sixth place in the conference standings with 12 points and a 3-4-3 record, and they were the No. 6 seed for the championship.
