Football stifles Colby on the road in 17-6 NESCAC win

Fewest points allowed in a game by the Continentals since 2016

WATERVILLE, Maine – Hamilton College quarterback Luke Kurzum '27 threw a touchdown pass and ran for another, and the Continentals posted a 17-6 win against the Colby College Mules at Colby's Seaverns Field on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (1-5 NESCAC) ended its losing skid, which dated back to last season, at nine games.
  • The Mules (3-3) came into the day with a three-game win streak.

How It Happened

  • The Continentals were clinging to a 7-6 lead midway through the third quarter when they went on a 75-yard drive that took more than seven minutes off the clock. A 26-yard completion to Matt Banbury '24 and a five-yard run by Kurzum on fourth-and-3 kept the drive alive. On the second play of the fourth quarter, Kurzum made it to the end zone from 13 yards out, and Ben Waterman '27 added the extra point for an eight-point cushion with 14:14 left.
  • Midway through the fourth quarter, Colby went for it on fourth-and-2 from its own 45, but the Hamilton defense forced an incomplete pass and took over on downs. The Continentals let Banbury, who finished with 82 all-purpose yards, take over from there as he carried the ball seven straight times for 21 yards. An eight-yard scramble by Kurzum brought it down to the Mules 16, and Waterman booted a 33-yard field goal for the 17-6 advantage with 3:01 remaining.
  • Colby turned the ball over on downs again at the Hamilton 29 and the Continentals ran out the final 1:57.
  • After a scoreless first quarter, A 45-yard field goal attempt by Waterman was blocked on the second play of the second quarter. The Mules drove 50 yards in eight plays and their kick from 39 yards out by Christos Tzoumakas was good for a 3-0 lead with 10:58 to go in the first half.
  • The next three possessions ended with punts, but Hamilton's defense came up with a huge play with a little more than four minutes left when Cole Rivell '24 forced a fumble and Hayden Zeller '24 recovered it at the Colby 36.
  • Two plays later Kurzum found Lucas Perez-Segnini '25 for a 34-yard touchdown. Waterman's PAT put the Continentals in front 7-3 with 3:09 remaining. Neither team threatened to score the rest of the half and Hamilton took its four-point lead into the locker room.
  • The first three drives in the third quarter ended with punts. The Mules pulled within a point on a 26-yard field goal by Tzoumakas with 6:17 to go in the third. The kick ended a drive that started at Colby's own 24. A 51-yard pass from Thomas Keeling to Matt McHugh put the Mules deep into Continentals' territory and into position for the field goal.

Notes

  • Hamilton has won three of its last four meetings with Colby.
  • The six points are the fewest the Continentals have allowed since a 16-6 win against Williams on Oct. 29, 2016.
