Football drops 35-14 decision at Wesleyan, scores special teams TD

Boynton '27 blocked a punt and returned it 36 yards for a score for the Continentals

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan University's Chase Wilson caught four touchdown passes and the Cardinals defeated the Hamilton College Continentals 35-14 at Wesleyan's Citrin Field on Saturday, Sept. 30.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (0-3 NESCAC) has scored two touchdowns in each of its three games this season.
  • The Cardinals (3-0) are one of two undefeated teams remaining in the conference.

How It Happened

  • Wesleyan scored on its first drive as the Cardinals went 63 yards in just three plays. Niko Candido completed a short pass to Wilson and he scampered 30 yards for the touchdown. Daniel Yoon added the extra point for a 7-0 lead 3:10 into the first quarter.
  • The Continentals responded on the next possession. Luke Kurzum '27 found Joseph Campanella '26 for a short pass and he ran 42 yards to the end zone with 8:50 remaining in the first. The PAT was unsuccessful and Hamilton still trailed by a point.
  • Late in the quarter, Wesleyan pinned the Continentals deep in their own territory and took over at its own 49 after a 38-yard punt. Candido threw a deep ball to Wilson for a 46-yard gain and found Wilson again in the end zone for a five-yard touchdown with 1:10 to go.
  • After Hamilton's touchdown, its last six possessions of the first half ended with five punts and a turnover on downs.
  • The Cardinals scored again before halftime. Wesleyan took over at its own 23 with 50 seconds left, and Candido completed a 46-yard pass to Thomas Elkhoury for a touchdown on the last play of the half. The Cardinals took a 21-6 advantage into the locker room.
  • Wesleyan received the opening kickoff in the second half and marched 75 yards in 11 plays. The drive ended with a seven-yard scoring toss from Candido to Wilson 4:42 into the third quarter.
  • Wesley Abraham intercepted a pass on the next play from scrimmage at his own 42, and the Cardinals chewed up five more minutes on another 11-play touchdown drive. On fourth-and-goal from the 6, Candido completed a pass to Wilson on the left side of the end zone with 4:59 remaining in the third.
  • The Continentals completed the scoring with 11:44 left in the fourth quarter. Facing fourth-and-long at the Hamilton 46, Wesleyan tried to pin the Continentals back with a punt, but wide receiver Chester Boynton '27 blocked it. Boynton picked up the ball at the Cardinals 36 and returned it for a special teams touchdown.
  • Wesleyan put a damper on any hopes of a Hamilton comeback with a 10-plus minute drive that ended on downs at the Continentals 7.
