Field hockey blitzes Wesleyan with three goals in third quarter

Four players scored for the Continentals in their 4-2 win over the Cardinals

Hamilton College scored three goals in the third quarter and the Continentals pulled away for a 4-2 NESCAC win against the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on a wet Sunday afternoon.

Season Update
The Continentals improved to 4-3 overall with their first conference win in four tries this year. Wesleyan dropped to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the NESCAC.

How It Happened
  • After a quiet first quarter that had just two shots and no penalty corners, Hamilton broke the ice with 5:31 left in the second. Sammy Higgins '26 took a pass from Claire Tratnyek '26 and sent the ball towards the cage from the right wing. Delaney Grace '25, who had set up directly in front of the goalkeeper, tipped it into the back of the cage.
  • The Cardinals drew even 43 seconds before the half. A shot by Sydney Atwood was kicked away by goalkeeper Abby Griffin '26, but Georgia Adams poked in the rebound for her third goal this fall.
  • The Continentals went in front for good 5:03 into the third quarter. Hannah Dillon '24 moved into the circle from the right side and found Tracey Stafford '23 open in front where she buried the shot.
  • Hamilton made it 3-1 just 62 seconds later. Grace inserted the ball on a penalty corner to stick stop Kiera Wax '23. Wax fed Dillon at the top of the circle and her blast was tipped by a Wesleyan player high into the back of the net.
  • The Continentals grabbed a commanding 4-1 lead with 5:18 remaining in the third. Alana King '24 took a shot from the left side that Camille Donaghey '23, who had inserted the ball on a corner seconds before, tipped past the goalkeeper at the near post.
  • Helen Deretchin scored for the Cardinals with 1:26 to go in the fourth quarter following a corner and accounted for the final score.

Notes
  • Dillon leads Hamilton with four assists and 10 points.
  • Grace scored her third career goal and has three assists this fall.
  • Stafford tallied her 13th career goal and is tied for the team lead with three this season.
  • Donaghey scored for the first time with the Continentals.
  • Wax picked up her first assist of 2022, Higgins collected her first collegiate point, and King has five helpers in 23 career games.
  • Griffin finished with four saves for Hamilton.
  • The Continentals received votes in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Top 20 poll.
  • Hamilton has won the last seven meetings with Wesleyan.
  • Both teams took 10 shots as the Cardinals had half of theirs in the final 15 minutes.
  • Hamilton owned a 6-4 edge in penalty corners, but four of them came in the third quarter alone for the Continentals.
