Football drops season opener at Bowdoin

Continentals fell behind 28-0 by halftime as their win streak against the Polar Bears ended at five

Bowdoin College's Andrew Boel threw three touchdown passes and ran for another in the Polar Bears' 41-13 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Bowdoin's Whittier Field on Saturday afternoon.

The conference game was the 2022 opener for both teams.
 
How It Happened
  • The Polar Bears scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, added two more in the second and led 28-0 at the half.
  • Bowdoin drove 70 yards in eight plays after it received the opening kickoff, capped with a 1-yard touchdown run by Boel.
  • The Polar Bears went 79 yards in nine plays on their next drive, and Boel finished it with a 30-yard pass to Jed Hoggard for another score.
  • Boel and Hoggard hooked up again – this time for 72 yards – on Bowdoin's next possession, and the Polar Bears led 21-0 one play into the second quarter.
  • Bowdoin made it four touchdowns in five possessions on a 1-yard run by Andre Eden with 3:29 left in the half. The 10-play drive chewed up more than five minutes off the clock.
  • Hamilton got on the scoreboard midway through the third quarter with the benefit of a short field after an interception at the Polar Bear 22-yard line. Kamau Hopewell '25 plunged into the end zone from the 2 with 5:08 remaining.
  • Bowdoin answered with an 85-yard drive that lasted more than seven minutes. Colton Fahey caught a 7-yard toss from Boel for the touchdown with 12:37 to go in the fourth.
  • A short punt by the Continentals gave the Polar Bears the ball at the Hamilton 43, and Bowdoin held onto it for the next 8:35. The drive featured 12 straight carries by Tim Cronin, who eventually scored from the 1, and it was 41-6.
  • The Continentals' Matt Banbury '23 threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Perez-Segnini '25 with 30 seconds left and Evan Reed '26 added his first collegiate extra point for the final score.
 
Notes
  • Banbury finished 23 of 33 passing for 201 yards in his second career start at quarterback.
  • Hopewell ended up with 58 yards on 20 carries.
  • Three Hamilton receivers caught five passes each: Perez-Segnini (65 yards), Josh Harmon '25 (46 yards), and tight end Mark Howrigan '23 (29 yards).
  • Perez-Segnini scored his first touchdown for the Continentals.
  • Cole Rivell '24 led the Hamilton defense with nine tackles and his first career interception.
  • Ian Esliker '23 and George Johnson '23 added seven stops apiece.
  • Boel was 17 of 20 with 249 yards passing for the Polar Bears.
  • Eden posted 124 yards rushing on 23 attempts.
  • Hoggard finished with three catches, including the two touchdowns, for 109 yards.
  • Max Jacobs was credited with 12 tackles including four for a total loss of eight yards.
  • Drew Ortiz and Aidan Reidy had 1.5 sacks apiece, and Mike Randall sacked the quarterback for a 10-yard loss.
  • The Continentals had 18 first downs and 246 yards of total offense. They were 6 of 14 on third down conversions and 1 of 3 on fourth down.
  • Hamilton had won the previous five meetings with Bowdoin.
 
Next Game
The Continentals host Amherst College on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. The Mammoths lost 17-6 to Middlebury College in their season opener.
