Field hockey hangs tough against No. 1 Middlebury as King '24 scores

Continentals dropped 2-1 NESCAC decision against undefeated Panthers

Middlebury College's Katie George had a goal and an assist, and the Panthers held on for a 2-1 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on Saturday.

Season Update
The Continentals dropped to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the NESCAC. Both Hamilton losses are against Division III top five teams. Nationally ranked No. 1 Middlebury remained undefeated at 4-0 (2-0 NESCAC).

How It Happened
  • The Panthers dominated the first quarter with an 11-0 shot advantage and five penalty corners to none for the Continentals.
  • Audrey Lazar finally made Middlebury's hard work pay off with her third goal this season. Katie George forced a turnover in Hamilton's end and carried the ball deep into the circle to the right of the cage. She threaded a pass to Lazar near the left post for a shot from point-blank range with 1:23 left in the first.
  • Neither team scored for another 33 minutes until George made it 2-0 with her third goal early in the fourth quarter. She forced another turnover just outside Hamilton's defensive circle, drove towards the right post and swept the ball into the cage 1:49 into the fourth.
  • Alana King '24 cut the Panthers' lead in half off a penalty corner with 40 seconds remaining. Hannah Dillon '24 received the ball on the left wing and passed over to King on the right. King settled the ball and hammered a shot that banged off the back of the cage.
  • The Continentals gained possession after the restart and were able to get the ball deep into Middlebury's defensive end, but couldn't get a shot off before time expired.

Notes
  • King scored a goal for the second straight game and now has six in her Hamilton career.
  • Dillon is tied for the team lead with two assists this season and has six with the Continentals.
  • Abby Griffin '26 made three of her four saves in the first quarter for Hamilton.
  • The Panthers held an 18-3 shot advantage and were awarded 15 corners to the Continentals' three.
  • Hamilton limited Middlebury to a season-low two goals.
  • The Panthers have played all four of their games on the road.

Next Game
The Continentals play a non-conference game at 4-1 Skidmore College on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m.
