Fourth quarter rally comes up short, despite another solid performance in goal by Fagan '23

Wesleyan University's Matt Gill posted three goals and two assists, and the Cardinals held on for a 10-8 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's snowy Withiam Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Continentals (4-4, 1-4 NESCAC) will be back in action Wednesday, April 6 at 5 p.m. against NESCAC foe Middlebury College at Hamilton's Withiam Field.

The Cardinals opened the third quarter with three straight goals and opened up their largest lead at 8-4 with 7:26 left. Defeo connected on a pass from Charlie Ratner '23 for Hamilton's only goal of the quarter with 4:27 remaining.

Hamilton trailed 8-5 going into the final 15 minutes, but a ground ball pickup and a goal by Wilde pulled the Continentals within two just 18 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Cardinals secured another man-up goal with 11:52 to go when Sexton scored on a feed from Gill.

Hamilton made one last push late in the fourth. After a save by Fagan and a successful clear, Defeo found Brumbaugh for a goal with 5:56 left. Defeo's third goal, on a pass from Pollock, pulled the Continentals within 9-8 with 4:19 remaining.

Wesleyan restored its two-goal advantage 31 seconds later when CK Giancola found the back of the net following a Hamilton faceoff violation. Hamilton produced eight shots the rest of the way but didn't get any closer. Fagan stopped seven shots in the fourth quarter alone.

Hamilton took its only lead at 2-1 with two goals 26 seconds apart midway through the first quarter. Pollock tied the score and Defeo put the Continentals in front with 6:23 to go.
