Baseball outslugs St. Lawrence in late-season non-conference game

Slinger '22 stays hot at the plate and the Continentals steal 10 bases

Hamilton College's Brady Slinger '22 performed at the plate and the Continentals won a non-conference contest against the St. Lawrence University Saints at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Tuesday.

Hamilton (15-13 overall) defeated St. Lawrence 12-6 as the contest was called for darkness after the top of the eighth inning. The Continentals return to Loop Road for a rescheduled NESCAC West Division matchup against Middlebury College on Wednesday, April 27 at 4 p.m.

The Saints (14-14), who are members of the Liberty League, scored a run in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the seventh. Four of their six runs scored on homers.

Slinger went 3-for-4 with an intentional walk and scored three times. Ethan Harrast '23 gathered two hits including a triple and scored three runs. Gavin Schaefer-Hood '22 led the Continentals with three runs batted in, and Jack Griffin '24 and Ethan Murphy '22 tallied two hits apiece. Phil Bernstein '23 scored three runs and Greg Kopp '25 drove in two. Bernstein and Slinger added three stolen bases apiece as Hamilton finished with 10. Slinger sits in second in the NESCAC with 20 stolen bases.

Schaefer-Hood improved to 4-2 as he started on the mound and allowed four runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings. He struck out five and walked none.

Nicholas Butler hit a solo shot in the fourth and Andrew Circelli pulled St. Lawrence within 6-4 with a three-run shot in the fifth. Butler, Circelli, Caleb Clark, David Courtwright and Michael Goretti tallied two hits each.

The Continentals gathered a 2-0 lead in the first. Bernstein and Harrast produced back-to-back singles up the middle and Kopp plated them both on a deep single to right center.

Hamilton added four runs in the second. Murphy led off with a double into the left field corner and after a pair of walks, Slinger stepped up and ripped a single through the right side that plated Bernstein and Murphy. Schaefer-Hood drove in Harrast on a fielder's choice, and Slinger scored on an infield error.

The Continentals responded to the Saints' homers with two runs in the sixth as they pushed their lead to 8-4.

After the Saints drew within 8-6 in the seventh, Hamilton answered with four two-out runs on three hits and three walks in the bottom half of the inning. Harrast drove in Bernstein with a triple, Schaefer-Hood singled in Harrast and Slinger, and Schaefer-Hood later scored on a single by Griffin.
