Baseball drops NESCAC West Division series finale against Wesleyan

Harrast '23 and Griffin '24 with two hits apiece for the Continentals

Wesleyan University's Scott Shield pitched six innings of one-hit, scoreless relief and the Cardinals posted a 6-3 NESCAC West Division win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The Continentals (13-12, 5-3 NESCAC West) pulled within 3-2 with two runs in the bottom of the third inning and trailed 4-3 after they scored a run in the fourth, but never got over the hump. Hamilton travels to Williams College for another divisional game on Friday, April 22 at 4 p.m.

Wesleyan (15-10, 6-3) scored two runs in its first at-bat, added single runs in the third and fourth innings, and registered two insurance runs in the seventh. The Cardinals won the weekend series with the Continentals after splitting the first two contests on Saturday.

Jack Griffin '24 and Ethan Harrast '23 finished with two hits apiece for Hamilton, and Greg Kopp '25 went 1-for-2 with two walks. Harrast leads the team with a .400 batting average and .479 on-base percentage. Brendan Kastner '23 allowed two hits and a walk and struck out three in 2.1 shutout innings of relief.

The Continentals loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning with no outs. Griffin singled to left field, Phil Bernstein '23 walked and Harrast hit an infield single towards the hole on the left side. Griffin scored on a wild pitch and Bernstein eventually scored the second run on a ground ball to the second baseman by Jackson Sattinger '24.

In the bottom of the fourth, Gavin Schaefer-Hood '22 drew a leadoff walk and Kopp moved him to third base on a single to right field. Griffin's two-out single to right plated Schaefer-Hood, but it also turned out to be Hamilton's last hit of the afternoon. The Continentals didn't get a runner past first base in the final five innings.
