Softball shut out at Wesleyan in NESCAC West Division game

McVey '22 has a hit in five straight contests

Wesleyan University's Isabella Secaira-Cotto threw a four-hit shutout and fanned six as the Cardinals took a 4-0 NESCAC West Division victory against the Hamilton College Continentals on Sunday afternoon at the Wesleyan Softball Field.

Hamilton (12-6, 1-3 NESCAC West Division) had won the previous four meetings against the Cardinals. The Continentals aim to bounce back in a non-conference doubleheader against Skidmore College at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Wednesday, April 13. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Wesleyan (8-9, 1-0) plated its first two runs in the bottom of the third. Revi Brown led off with a single to right field and advanced to second on an infield single by Ava Pfannenbecker. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, Brown was thrown out at home on a comebacker to pitcher Natalie Beebe '24. Sophie Sciarappa knocked in Pfannenbecker and Mancuso on a two-out double to the gap in right center.

The Cardinals tacked on two unearned runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Mancuso and an RBI single by Secaira-Cotto.

Hamilton struggled at the plate and only put runners in scoring position on four occasions. The Continentals' best chance came in the second inning with runners on second and third, but Secaira-Cotto stranded the runners with her second strikeout.

Alessandra Priante '24, Shelby McVey '22, Samantha Smith '23 and Vicky Dunn '22 tallied one hit each. Beebe (8-2) pitched a complete game as she allowed only two earned runs on seven hits and collected seven strikeouts.
