Men's lacrosse edged at Conn. College, Brumbaugh '23 scores five

Continentals led by four goals in the first half and by two with less than two minutes left in fourth quarter

Connecticut College's Jared Rainville scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the Camels' 12-11 overtime victory against the Hamilton College Continentals at Conn. College's Silfen Field on Saturday afternoon.
 
Hamilton (2-3, 0-3 NESCAC) led 4-0 in the first quarter and 7-3 in the second. The Continentals scored on their only extra-man opportunity while they held the Camels scoreless in five chances. Hamilton takes on SUNY Cortland on Wednesday, March 23 in a non-conference road game at 6:30 p.m.
 
Conn. College (2-2, 1-1) never led until Rainville's third goal and fifth point with four seconds left in the sudden-victory overtime period. JJ Ford and Jack Tenzer scored three goals apiece. Ford and Brendan Trovato scooped up four ground balls apiece, and both Trovato and Jack Venturelli caused two turnovers. Will Rice made 11 saves including two in the extra period.
 
Rowan Brumbaugh '23 paced the Continentals offense with a career-high five goals. Britt Defeo '22 chipped in three goals and two assists, Christian Byrne '24 posted four helpers and four ground balls, and Justin Pearl '25 added a goal and an assist.
 
Jayme Wilde '25 picked up four ground balls, Defeo caused two turnovers and Michael Scoleri '24 won 15 of 27 faceoffs. Seamus Fagan '23 made a career-best 22 stops. Fagan has a 9.12 goals against average and .634 save percentage in 295-plus minutes.
 
Fagan turned away two shots in the first two minutes of overtime, and Pearl was denied by Rice with 2:52 remaining. After a good clear attempt by Hamilton, the Continentals put one shot on goal and another sailed wide with 1:31 remaining. Defeo then caused a turnover and collected the ground ball, and Hamilton called a timeout with 1:02 to go. A shot by the Continentals was blocked with 23 seconds left and Venturelli corralled the ground ball. Rainville eventually gained possession and ended the game in the final seconds of the extra session.
 
Hamilton led 11-9 after a man-up goal by Brumbaugh with 4:26 remaining in the fourth. JJ Ford pulled the Camels within a goal with 1:35 to go. Rainville hit the crossbar with a shot with 48 seconds left and eventually tied the score with 19 seconds remaining.
 
Brumbaugh scored two goals early in the first quarter and the Continentals led 4-0 with 9:18 to go. Conn. College responded with three straight goals and trailed 4-3 with 9:57 left in the second quarter. Nathanial Field '24, Brumbaugh and Defeo answered with three consecutive scores and Hamilton was back up by four at 7-3 with 4:21 remaining.
 
The Camels climbed back to within one at 7-6 at the break. The Continentals, who didn't lead by more than two in the second half, held an 8-7 edge after three quarters. Conn. College tied the score at 8-8 and 9-9 early in the fourth.
 
Defeo leads the team with nine assists and 17 points, and Brumbaugh has scored 13 goals. Scoleri has won 62.3 percent of his faceoffs and tops Hamilton with 17 ground balls. Marc Welch '22 has caused eight turnovers.
