The Hamilton College Continentals edged the Wesleyan University Cardinals 5-4 in the first round of the 2022 NESCAC Men's Squash Championship at Wesleyan's Rosenbaum Squash Center on Friday night.

Hamilton moves on to the quarterfinals where the Continentals will face top seed Trinity College at Trinity's George A. Kellner Squash Courts on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 9 a.m. Hamilton, which is the No. 8 seed for the championship, improved its record to 5-7. The ninth-seeded Cardinals dropped to 3-6.

The Continentals defeated Wesleyan 7-2 at home back on Dec. 4, but this meeting was much closer. No fewer than five of the nine matches went to a fifth game, including Nicholas Carabatsos '24 at the fifth position. Carabatsos trailed after three games but rallied by scores of 11-7 and 11-6 in the fourth and fifth games.

Tripp Peters '23 recovered from a 16-14 setback in the first game and won in five at the eighth position. Peters is 4-1 this season after joining the team in January. Tate Suratt '24 was impressive in sweeping his opponent in three games at the first position.

William Rice '24 also swept his opponent at the sixth position, and allowed just eight points in the second and third games. Tate Burgin '25 closed out his opponent with a 12-10 decision in the fourth game at the seventh position. Burgin leads the team with seven victories.
