Men’s basketball bounces back with win over Southwestern in Texas

Morgan ’25 tallied double figures in points for third consecutive game

Hamilton College's Hank Morgan '25 netted a game-high 14 points and the Continentals earned a 66-51 win against the Southwestern University Pirates in Southwestern's Paul Peak Classic at the Corbin J. Robertson Center on Sunday evening. 

 

How It Happened

• The Continentals opened the first half with a 6-1 spurt. TejaSingh '25, Eric Anderson '23 and Morgan made baskets
• Southwestern evened the score at 6-6 on a 3-pointer by Shobby Enakpene with 12:02 remaining.
• Garret Keyhani '26 and Yashiya Crespin '26 netted 3-pointers and Hamilton doubled up the Pirates at 12-6. 
• The Continentals stretched their lead to eight at 20-12 on a layup by Singh with 6:05 remaining.
• The Pirates quickly responded with a 12-3 surge that cut Hamilton's lead to just one point at 23-22 with 3:15 left. 
• Singh hit a jumper and Liam Regan '23 made a pair of shots at the line that made it 27-22 with two minutes remaining. 
• After a made Southwestern free throw, Singh netted a 3-ball with 31 seconds to go for a 30-23 lead. 
• The Pirates called a timeout and Chris Smith beat the halftime buzzer with a three-ball for a 30-26 score at the break. 
• Hamilton started the second half with a 6-0 run for its first double-digit lead at 36-26 with 17:45 left
• The Continentals claimed an 11-point lead after a steal and slam dunk by Rood a little more than a minute later
• The Pirates' defense rose up and they slowly worked away at Hamilton's lead, eventually cutting it down to four points at 44-40 with 6:34 remaining.
• Anderson and Rood combined to hit six free throws and pushed the Continentals' lead back to 10 at 50-40 with 5:07 to go.
• Luke Hatcher swished a 3-pointer for the Pirates, but Rood responded with a layup and later two free throws for an 11-point cushion at 54-43 with 3:20 left
• The Pirates cut their deficit back to seven with 2:17 remaining after a layup and two free throws.
• Hamilton clinched the win by scoring the next five points. Morgan quieted the crowd with a classic and-1 play.Anderson stole the ball, was fouled and made both free throws with 1:11 left.
• Southwestern called a timeout after a layup, but the Pirates fouled Rood who buried another pair of free throws with under a minute remaining.
• The Continentals defense applied pressure and Owen Kane '25 gathered a steal. Southwestern intentionally fouled Morgan and he made both free throws.
• Hamilton earned its largest lead of 17 points at 66-49 after Anderson stole the ball, was fouled and netted two from the line with 17 ticks left.
• The Continentals went 18-for-19 at the line in the final six minutes
• Hamilton shot 40.4 percent (19-47) from the floor and a season-best 77.4 percent (24-31) at the charity stripe.
• The Continentals netted 20 points off 21 turnovers by the Pirates.
• Hamilton held a 34-27 advantage on the boards.
• The Pirates shot just 31.9 percent (15-47 from the floor and 51.7 percent (15-29) at the line.
• Southwestern collected 33 bench points.

 

Notes

• Hamilton (2-1) handed Southwestern (1-4) its second loss in as many days
• Morgan shot 50 percent from the floor (5-10) and went perfect at the line (3-3). 
• Singh shot 5 of 7 from the floor for 12 points and led Hamilton with four assists. 
• Anderson went an impressive 10-for-12 at the line and boasted 12 points and four steals.
• Rood contributed 11 points, three assists and three steals
• Kane notched a team-best six rebounds.
• Regan tallied two blocked shots
• Zac Black paced Southwestern with eight points.
• Calvin Williams added seven points for the Pirates.
• Jacob Hester, Jones and Enakpene tallied six points each for Southwestern.

 

Next Game

• Hamilton will wrap up its Texas swing on Wednesday, Nov. 23 against Texas Lutheran University (3-2) at 3 p.m. Eastern time.
