Dunn '22 collects three hits in softball doubleheader loss at Middlebury

Continentals bang out nine hits in season finale

The Hamilton College Continentals were swept by the Middlebury College Panthers in a doubleheader played at the Middlebury Softball Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers came from behind for a 3-2 win in the opener and posted a 6-1 victory in the nightcap. Hamilton took two of three from Middlebury in a NESCAC West Division tripleheader at home on April 24. The Continentals finished the pandemic-shortened season with an overall record of 6-7.

Game 1

Hamilton led 1-0 in the top of the second inning and 2-1 in the top of the fifth, but the Panthers came back on solo home runs in the bottom of each inning. Middlebury took its first lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a double.

Natalie Beebe '24 (2-2) pitched all six innings and allowed three runs on six hits and three walks. Beebe also struck out seven batters and is third in the conference with 37.

Samantha Smith '23 reached on a two-base outfield error with one out in the second and went to third on a groundout. Smith later scored on a wild pitch. The Continentals rallied in the fourth with two singles, but a strikeout stranded runners at second and third.

In the top of the fifth inning Vicky Dunn '22 led off with a bunt single and stole second base. Dunn went to third on a groundout and, with two outs, scored on an infield error.

Game 2

The Panthers (6-10) scored a run in the first, three in the second and another in the third. Hamilton left six runners on base during the first six innings before finally pushing a run across in the top of the seventh. Alessandra Priante '24 hit an infield single with one out and went all the way around to third on an infield error. Priante scored on a sacrifice fly by Beebe.

Dunn and Anna Rasmussen '21 singled and doubled, and Kiana Arcayena '22 finished with two hits. Rasmussen is sixth in the conference with a .449 batting average, tied for fifth with 22 hits and tied for eighth with 14 runs batted in. Arcayena is tied for ninth with a .417 batting average.

Claire O'Brien '21 (1-4) threw all six innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits and five walks. She fanned six and finished the season with 30.
