Bernstein '23 racks up three hits in season-opening doubleheader

Williams sweeps NESCAC West Division twinbill

Nick Skiera's pitching and Jakob Cohn's hitting helped lead the Williams College Ephs to a NESCAC West Division doubleheader sweep against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Continentals played their first two games of the season and their first NESCAC West Division contests since 2019. Hamilton played just three times last year and is playing a shortened 2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The teams play a nine-inning game in Williamstown, Mass., on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Game 1

Cohn had four hits including two doubles and drove in three runs in Williams' 10-4 victory in the opener. Eric Pappas and Philip Barnett chipped in two hits apiece. Sean Hogan pitched the first four innings and picked up the win, and Bryan Woolley earned the save with five strikeouts in three hitless frames.

Phil Bernstein '23 singled twice and led the Continentals' offense. Jackson Sattinger '24 allowed six hits and one earned run in four innings in his collegiate debut. Ed Connolly '23 tossed a perfect 1.1 innings in relief.

After the Ephs scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning, Hamilton cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the second. Gavin Schaefer-Hood '22 led off and reached base on an infield error. Schaefer-Hood advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single through the left side of the infield by Ethan Harrast '23.

Williams scored a run in the third inning and broke it open with four more in the fifth for a 7-1 cushion. The Continentals responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ethan Wallis '21 led off with his fifth career triple and Brady Slinger '22 walked. Bernstein's sharp single to left field scored Wallis and Matt McGoey '21 was intentionally walked after Bernstein and Slinger pulled off a double steal. Shane Dux '24 and Jacob Han '21 worked bases-loaded walks and Hamilton pulled within 7-4.

Williams got the three runs back in the top of the sixth and the Continentals managed one base runner the last two innings.

Game 2

Skiera pitched all seven innings for the Ephs in the nightcap. He allowed two runs on five hits and fanned six. Williams scored three runs, including two unearned, in the first inning and added two more in the third. Jeremy Irzyk made it 4-1 with a one-out triple to deep right-center field that scored Cohn.

Han singled and hammered his first career triple for Hamilton. Schaefer-Hood pitched the first five innings and surrendered three earned runs on five hits and struck out five. Jack Clougherty '23 and David Galvao '23 hurled one perfect inning apiece in relief.

The Continentals pulled within 3-1 in the bottom of the first. Wallis led off with a walk and moved around on a groundout and a fly ball to deep center. He scored on McGoey's two-out single to left field.
Hamilton completed the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Slinger drilled a one-out triple to right-center and trotted home on Bernstein's groundout to short.
