The Hamilton College Continentals lost 3-0 to the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in the quarterfinals of the 2021 NESCAC Volleyball Championship on Friday at Bowdoin's Morrell Gym.
Hamilton (7-13 overall) was the championship's No. 8 seed after it tied for seventh place in the conference standings with a 3-7 record. The Continentals posted a .047 hitting percentage with 21 kills, 18 assists, 49 digs, four aces and 16 attack errors in 106 attempts.
Bowdoin (20-4) finished first in the conference standings with a 9-1 record. The Polar Bears received votes in the most recent Division III Top 25 coaches poll and is ranked third in the region by the NCAA. The Polar Bears recorded a .316 hitting percentage with 38 kills, 36 assists, 68 digs, nine aces, eight blocks and eight attack errors in 95 attempts.
The set scores were 25-15, 25-17 and 25-12.
Kate Carman '24 led the Continentals with eight kills while
Cece Nourie '25 had a team-high 13 digs.
Summer McClintic '24 added four kills, 11 digs and two service aces.
Melissa Morelli '24 was credited with a team-high 14 assists and served two aces, and
Deirdre Corrigan '23 had 10 digs.
The first set was tied three times before Bowdoin took over. The Polar Bears went on a 6-1 spurt and grabbed a 9-4 advantage. Hamilton didn't get closer than three points after that.
Hamilton took a 6-3 lead in the second set but Bowdoin roared back and claimed a 9-7 edge. The Continentals tied the score at 9-9 and the Polar Bears responded with three straight points. Hamilton was still just two back at 17-15 when a 7-1 Bowdoin run all but clinched the set.
The Continentals held a 6-3 edge again in the third set but the Polar Bears out-scored Hamilton 7-1 for a 10-7 lead. Bowdoin slowly pulled away and moved on to a NESCAC semifinal against No. 5 seed Amherst College on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m.
