Hamilton College went on an 11-4 run the last 2:35 of the fourth quarter and the Continentals came from behind for a 59-53 victory against the Framingham State University Rams in the 2021 Williams College Morin Memorial Classic at Chandler Gym on Friday night.
Hamilton (2-1 overall) takes on 4-0 St. Lawrence University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20 in Williamstown, Mass. The Continentals were 7 of 12 from the field in the fourth quarter.
Framingham State (2-1) shot just 30.5 percent (18-59) from the floor including 4 of 21 (19 percent) from beyond the arc. The Rams owned a 42-40 edge in rebounds.Â
Claire Sehring '22 put Hamilton in the lead at 50-49 with 2:35 left after
Kelcie Zarle '22 drove into the lane and shoveled an underhand pass to a wide-open Sehring for a layup from the left block. Framingham missed a layup at the other end and
Tessa Cole '25 found Zarle for a 3-pointer from at least three feet behind the line with 2:00 remaining.
The Rams called a timeout and once action resumed, Flannery O'Connor was fouled on a drive to the basket and cut their deficit in half at 53-51 with two free throws. A turnover and a missed layup later, the Continentals had the ball again. Zarle brought the ball upcourt and proceeded to dribble around for about 20 seconds before she launched a step-back 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 56-51 advantage with 39.9 seconds to go.
Katty Haidul grabbed an offensive rebound and made the putback as Framingham cut it to 56-53 with 27.7 seconds left. Zarle was fouled and made both free throws with 23.9 seconds remaining, and
Emma Sehring '23 clinched the win on another free throw with 13.2 ticks to go.
Zarle -- the reigning NESCAC Player of the Week -- poured in 28 points and is averaging 29.0 through the first three games. Zarle was a perfect 5 of 5 from the field and scored 14 points in the fourth quarter alone.
Maria Mercado Rengel '24 chipped in 10 points and
Emma Sehring added seven rebounds and five assists.
Claire Sehring pulled down seven boards and
Olivia Davis '23 made three steals.
Krysta Padellaro led the Rams with 19 points. O'Connor filled the stat sheet with 11 points, four blocked shots and four steals. Haidul nearly had a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Gwendolyn Carpenter contributed nine rebounds and four assists.
The score was tied at 12-12 after the first quarter, 26-26 at the half and 39-39 at the end of the third quarter. The first half of the first quarter was all Framingham as the Rams jumped out to a 12-0 lead. Hamilton roared back with its own 12-0 spurt that featured 10 points by Zarle.
Neither team led by more than five points the rest of the way until
Emma Sehring's free throw in the final seconds that accounted for the six-point margin. Framingham was 4 of 15 from the floor, including 0 of 5 from long range, in the final 10 minutes.
