The Hamilton College Continentals advanced to the second round of the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship tournament after they defeated the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats 3-2 in a first round match at William Smith College's Cozzens Field on Saturday afternoon.
The nationally ranked No. 17 Continentals (14-2-2 overall) will face off against No. 3 William Smith on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. in Geneva, N.Y. The Herons (17-1-1) breezed to a 9-0 victory against John Jay College in Saturday's earlier match.
The Wildcats, ranked eighth in Region I by the NCAA, finished their season 17-4-2 overall.
Cat Gambino '22 led Hamilton with her first two goals this season and
Olivia Zubarik '25 chipped in a goal and an assist. The Continentals, who were ranked third in Region I by the NCAA, out-shot Johnson & Wales 21-8 with 13 on goal.
Hamilton's
Caity Smith '23 made two saves before she was replaced by
Clare Robinson '25 with 13:52 to go. The Wildcats' Carly McCrumb made 10.
Hamilton struck first in the third minute when
Rylie Mutton '23 sent a crossing pass into the middle of the 18-yard box from the right side. Gambino took one step forward and kicked it into the mid-right area of the goal out of the keeper's diving reach. Mutton leads the team with six assists and is tied for first with 20 points.
Gambino scored again in the 12
th minute off a long pass from Zubarik down the left side. Gambino kicked the ball into the back of the net in midair for her 26th career goal.
Zubarik scored the Continentals' third goal 3:12 into the second half. She received a pass that was played down the middle and kicked it into the top-left corner from the top of the box for her fifth goal.
Johnson & Wales scored in the 80
th minute when they ran the ball down the left side into the box and crossed it to the middle where it was tapped in low past Robinson. The Wildcats scored again in the 84
th minute. The ball was played down the right side and crossed into the middle of the box where Jordan Restivo put a shot into the bottom-left portion of the frame.
Hamilton is 4-26-6 all-time against William Smith. The last time the two teams met was on Oct. 2, 2010 and the match ended in a 0-0 tie.
