Volleyball drops three sets to Colby in NESCAC match

The Hamilton College Continentals forced extra points in the second set but ultimately were swept by the Colby College Mules in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon inside Colby's Margaret M. Crook Arena.

The set scores were 25-23, 29-27 and 25-19. The Continentals (6-6 overall, 2-4 NESCAC) posted a team hitting percentage of .105 with 33 kills and 32 assists while the Mules posted a .177 hitting percentage with 40 kills and 37 assists. Both teams recorded nine aces.

Deirdre Corrigan '23 led the team with seven kills and added 11 digs and two aces. Cece Nourie '25 was credited with 13 digs, Kate Carman '24 had seven kills and Melissa Morelli '24 recorded 27 assists, six digs and three aces. Jane Fanning '22 led the defense at the net with four blocks and Chiara Morley-McLaughlin '24 chipped in three.

Hamilton tied the score at 4-4 in the first set but Colby went on an 8-1 run for a seven-point advantage and eventually extended it to 19-10. The Continentals were down 22-14 when they went on a seven-point spree and came within one point. Corrigan started the rally with a kill and Fanning and Morley-McLaughlin capped it with block assists. Colby closed out the set with two kills and a block.

Colby (8-6, 2-5) scored the first point of the second set before Hamilton went on a six-point run. The Mules scored 10 of the next 12 points for an 11-8 edge and extended it to six at 17-11. The Continentals came within 18-17 after a five-point spree and took a 23-22 lead after another five-point rally. Colby tied it three times and then out-scored Hamilton 5-2 as they finally took the second set.

The Mules started the third set with four consecutive points. Hamilton came back and took an 8-7 lead. The score was tied three more times and the lead changed three times before Colby, which trailed 14-12, out-scored Hamilton 9-1 for a six-point cushion. The Mules kept the lead and completed the sweep.

Hamilton will host Connecticut College for another NESCAC match on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
