Zubarik '25 scores, No. 19 women’s soccer advances to NESCAC semis

Hamilton College's Olivia Zubarik '25 scored the lone goal and helped the Continentals advance to the semifinals of the 2021 NESCAC Women's Soccer Championship with a 1-0 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos on Saturday afternoon at Hamilton's Love Field.

Nationally ranked No. 19 Hamilton is the No. 3 seed in the tournament, and the Continentals improved to 13-1-2 overall. The 13 wins are the most since 2007 and the third-highest total for a season in team history. Tufts, which is the championship's No. 6 seed, finished at 8-7-0 overall.

The Continentals will travel to Amherst College and will take on No. 2 seed Wesleyan University on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m. Hamilton is in the semifinals for the second time since they joined the conference for women's soccer in 2011.

Despite being out-shot 16-14, the Continentals recorded more shots on goal as they had nine to the Jumbos' eight. Zubarik led the team with four shots on goal, Rylie Mutton '23 had two and Hyla Mosher '23, Caroline Dawson '23 and Olivia Morrow '24 all had one.

Caity Smith '23 recorded seven saves for her third shutout and Hamilton's ninth this season while Tufts' Kaelin Logue made eight stops. Smith has a 0.72 goals against average and .877 save percentage in 13 starts.

Tufts out-shot Hamilton 8-4 in the first half with four on goal, but Smith made the saves to keep the Jumbos off the scoreboard. The Continentals picked up the momentum and controlled the second half from the start.

Zubarik's goal came 85 seconds into the second half. Mosher received a pass from Dawson down the right side just outside the box. Mosher beat a defender and crossed the ball into the box near the right post where Zubarik ran up and deflected it into the top-right corner off a one-step kick for her fourth goal. Mosher leads the team with 20 points.

Hamilton recorded nine more shots the remainder of the match and held possession for the majority of the half. Smith made four saves in the second half.
