Corrigan '23, Carman '24 lead volleyball in 3-2 win over Amherst

The Hamilton College Continentals battled to a 3-2 NESCAC win over the Amherst College Mammoths on Friday night inside Amherst's LeFrak Gymnasium.

This marks the Continentals' fifth win over the Mammoths in 26 meetings. The set scores were 27-25, 7-25, 25-20, 15-25 and 15-13.

Hamilton (7-11, 3-6 NESCAC) posted a .152 hitting percentage with 53 kills, 46 assists, a season-high 96 digs and 25 errors in 184 attempts. Kate Carman '24 led the team with 20 kills and Deirdre Corrigan '23 posted a double-double with 15 kills and 17 digs. Melissa Morelli '24 also had 17 digs and added 39 assists, and Cece Nourie '25 had 17 digs as well. Five Continentals finished the match in double figures in digs.

Amherst (14-4, 5-4), which received votes in this week's Division III Top 25 coaches poll, recorded a .264 hitting percentage with 62 kills, 50 assists, 98 digs and 16 errors in 174 attempts. The Mammoths owned a 9-2 advantage in service aces and were credited with six blocks to Hamilton's three.

Amherst led by as many as six points and still held a 24-19 advantage late in the first set, but Hamilton went on a six-point run for a 25-24 edge. The Mammoths tied the score before the Continentals scored the last two points on a Carman kill and a bad set by Amherst.

The third set was tied six times before Hamilton gave itself some breathing room with a six-point spree for an 18-10 cushion. Amherst went on a five-point run and came within 21-18 but the Continentals were able to close out the set on four kills by Corrigan.

Amherst took control of the fourth set early and won it by 10 points to force the deciding fifth set.

The score was tied 10 times and the lead changed six times in the final set. Hamilton scored the last three points on a pair of attack errors by the Mammoths and one last Corrigan kill for the match.

The Continentals will wrap up their regular season on the road at Middlebury College for another NESCAC match on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.
