King '24 lifts No. 15 field hockey to overtime win at Rochester

Sophomore scores third goal in first sudden-victory period

Hamilton College's Alana King '24 scored 3:45 into the first sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Continentals to a 2-1 non-conference win against the University of Rochester Yellowjackets at Rochester's Fauver Stadium on Wednesday night.

Nationally ranked No. 15 Hamilton (10-5 overall) won its third straight game. The Continentals travel to No. 3 Tufts University for a 2021 NESCAC Field Hockey Championship quarterfinal on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 11:30 a.m.

King took advantage of the extra space on the field during overtime by making a long run down the right side and veering into the circle. She beat goaltender Abigail Walrond (10 saves) with a shot from six yards out on her short side. King has three goals and nine points this year.

The Yellowjackets (11-6) were firing on all cylinders early as they held an 8-4 shot advantage in the first half and were awarded three penalty corners in the first quarter. Juney Lee gave Rochester a 1-0 lead with 8:56 left in the first on her third goal this fall. Amanda Strenk was credited with an assist. The Continentals' Keeley Duran '22 made her third defensive save this year just 10 seconds before Lee's goal.

Hamilton tied the score with just 1:37 remaining in the second quarter. Grace Chapis '24 tallied her first collegiate goal on a backhand shot from close range. Becca Munoz '25 collected the assist for her first collegiate point in her fifth game. The Continentals penetrated the circle, but Walrond tipped the ball away from Chapis. The loose ball came to Munoz who slid it back to Chapis positioned on the end line just outside the left post. She shot the equalizer into the lower left-hand corner.

The Continentals turned the tables on the Yellowjackets after halftime as Hamilton enjoyed a 12-1 shot advantage and took five corners while Rochester had none. The Yellowjackets didn't take a shot the last 32 minutes. Mara Heppard prevented Hamilton from taking the lead in regulation by making back-to-back defensive saves with a little less than seven minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

Maggie Reville '22 was solid in the cage again for the Continentals with seven saves. Reville has a 1.52 goals against average and .784 save percentage and has played every minute this season.
