The Hamilton College varsity eight finished in 19th place out of 40 entries in the Collegiate Eights race at the 2021 Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass., on Sunday afternoon.
The Continentals posted a time of 18:16.986 and Hamilton's second varsity eight crossed the finish line in 37th place in 19:25.753. Mercyhurst University took the top spot in 17:16.794.
"This was the first time racing for many at the Charles," Head Coach
James Lister said. "The field is super-competitive and there is good work to be done to meet the speed. Our finish times are helpful to know where we are now and give ourselves perspective on what we can do to meet the standard. The varsity eight secured an automatic bid for next year's race by finishing in the top half of the event."
A dozen entries came from other NESCAC schools. Bates College was third in 17:22.050 and Tufts University made the short trip from Medford and recorded a time of 17:41.805.
"Overall, I am excited that the rowers got to race one of the more exciting races with a lot of teams from around the country and a tough race course with many bridges and big turns," Lister said. "Last fall was spent training on land all semester, so to have our season back was really nice. We were able to enjoy our sport on a big stage on the Charles River."
The Continentals close out the fall schedule with the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Saturday morning, Oct. 30.
