Royal '22 scores in men's soccer season-ending loss at Wesleyan

Continentals were searching for their sixth straight win in an effort to qualify for postseason

The Hamilton College Continentals' season ended on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 NESCAC loss to the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Wesleyan's Jackson Field.

Hamilton ends its season with an overall record of 7-7-1 including 3-7-0 in the conference. Saturday's setback marked the end of a five-match win streak -- all at home -- that included three victories over NESCAC opponents and an overtime triumph against then-nationally ranked No. 5 SUNY Oneonta.

Hamilton's goal came off the foot of Spencer Royal '22 in the 34th minute. Down 2-0, Simon Hoke '24 sent a pass down the right side to a rushing Royal. Royal outran the Wesleyan defense and shot the ball to the far-left side. Wesleyan goalkeeper Liam Devanny (nine saves) came off his line to try and meet the ball but he just missed, and the ball found its way to the far-left corner of the net. Royal's goal was his first since he tallied three in a win at SUNY Oswego in the season opener. Hoke picked up his second assist.

Despite the loss, Hamilton owned a 17-12 shot advantage. Thomas Benson '22 made three saves in his final match with the Continentals.

Wesleyan (10-2-2, 5-2-2 NESCAC) opened the scoring early in the first half on a goal by Matthew Rubinstein in just the fourth minute. Rubinstein received a pass at the goal line and waited for Benson to dive out to meet the ball before shooting it past him.

The Cardinals doubled their lead in the 21st minute on a goal by Dane Harmaty. He received a Christopher Textor pass from midfield, twisted between the Hamilton defense and shot past the committed Benson.

Wesleyan, which led 2-1 at the half, secured the win in the 75th minute. Jake Lundberg carried the ball up the far right wing before sending a centering pass to Zack Burd. Burd received the ball directly in front of Benson and lifted it over him to the top center of the net.
