Box Score Tufts University shot 64 percent from the floor in the first half and the Jumbos went on to post an 83-66 win against the Hamilton College Continentals in a 2020 NESCAC Men's Basketball Championship quarterfinal at Tufts' Cousens Gym on Saturday.
Hamilton ended its season with a 16-9 overall record after advancing to the third round of the NCAA Division III championship each of the past two years. The Continentals are the eighth seed for the championship while the Jumbos are the top seed. The two teams have met in the conference championship four years in a row.
Tufts (19-6 overall) received votes in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and the Jumbos are ranked fourth in the Northeast Region according to the NCAA. Tufts will host the NESCAC championship semifinals and final next weekend.
Eric Anderson '22 nailed five 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 19 points for Hamilton. Kena Gilmour '20 chipped in 16 points, five rebounds and three of the Continentals' 10 steals. Gilmour, who leads the conference with 22.0 points per game, finished his Hamilton career in fifth place on the team's all-time list with 1,935 points.
Sayo Denloye '20 handed out four assists before he fouled out in his last game with the Continentals, and Nick Osarenren '22 was credited with three steals. Osarenren tops the NESCAC with 50 steals this season. Hamilton scored 24 points off 18 Jumbo turnovers.
Eric Savage led Tufts with 20 points and Tyler Aronson added 15. Luke Rogers recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards, including six on the offensive glass. Brennan Morris contributed 10 points and Dylan Thoerner and Max Oppenheim scored nine apiece off the bench. The Jumbos held a 40-28 advantage on the boards and scored 36 points in the paint.
Tufts scored the first five points, opened the first half with a 14-3 run and never trailed. The Continentals closed to within three points at 14-11 with 12:50 left on five points by Gilmour and a basket from beyond the arc by Anderson. The Jumbos ran off the next eight points for a 22-11 advantage midway through the half and Hamilton didn't get closer than nine points during the last 30 minutes. Tufts led 37-23 at the break. The Continentals shot 52 percent from the field including 7 of 11 from long distance in the second half but couldn't close the gap.
