Storr '22 shuts down Wesleyan offense in men's hockey road win

Box Score

Hamilton College goaltender Sean Storr '22 made 25 saves and led the Continentals to a 2-0 shutout against the Wesleyan University Cardinals in a NESCAC matchup at Wesleyan's Spurrier-Snyder Rink on Friday night.

Hamilton (6-7-4, 5-4-2 NESCAC) took the season series from the Cardinals as the Continentals edged Wesleyan 5-4 back on Nov. 22. Six players registered one point each while Justin Felhaber '21 won 10 of 15 faceoffs and Cade Groton '23 won 7 of 11. Storr has two shutouts in six starts with a 1.50 goals against average and .940 save percentage. In addition to Storr's 25 saves, the Hamilton skaters also blocked 24 shots.

The Cardinals (9-8-0, 5-6) nearly doubled up the Continentals in shots on goal with 25 to Hamilton's 13. Tim Sestak made 11 saves in 56-plus minutes in goal.

The Continentals opened the scoring late in the first period with 2:04 left. Josh Labonte '21 carried the puck up the right wing side from the defensive zone and sped into the offensive zone. At the faceoff circle, he fired a centering pass that found the stick of Andrew Court '22 and he hammered a one-timer. The puck flew through the air, into the crossbar and then fell down for his second goal this season. Labonte leads the team with seven assists and Jordi Jefferson '22 picked up his fourth.

Hamilton doubled its lead less than a minute later with 1:27 remaining. In the middle of a Hamilton onslaught, Jon Beniers '21 grabbed the puck from behind the net and carried it forward to the right faceoff circle where he fired a shot. Sestak blocked the first shot, but did not retain control of the puck. Beniers rushed to the front of the net where he was able to grab the loose puck and knock in the rebound for his fourth goal. Teddy Simson '21 and Stephen Cochrane '20 had the assists.

Hamilton kept its two-goal lead intact throughout the second and third periods. The teams exchanged penalties with the Continentals receiving four and Wesleyan receiving three, including concurrent penalties for roughing following a scrum at the Hamilton net early in the second.

Hamilton took the lone penalty in the third period for hooking with 1:48 to go. Wesleyan pulled Sestak and had a 6-on-4 opportunity for the remaining time in regulation. Storr was able to stop three shots with about 40 seconds left, and Nick Rutigliano '22 blocked two more to keep the shutout intact.

The Continentals have another NESCAC matchup on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. against nationally ranked No. 4 Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.
