Women's hockey rallies for non-conference win at SUNY Oswego

Box Score

Hamilton College's Maura Holden '23 scored a goal and assisted on the other in the Continentals' 2-1 non-conference win against the SUNY Oswego Lakers at Oswego's Marano Campus Center Arena on Tuesday night.

Hamilton (10-6-0 overall) extended its win streak to four games and has six victories in its last seven contests. The Continentals outscored their eight non-conference opponents 31-11 this season, and they are outscoring opponents 21-12 overall in the third period. Hamilton owned a 33-13 shot advantage and has put 264 more shots on goal than its opponents have.

The Lakers (9-5-3) were 1-for-3 on the power play. Oswego is winless in its last four games at 0-2-2. The Lakers are stuck on four wins in 14 all-time meetings with the Continentals.

Holden has three multi-point games in the last four. Michaela Giuttari '20 scored Hamilton's other goal and is tied for the team lead with six and tied for second in the NESCAC with 18 points. Giuttari is tied for the conference lead with 12 assists. Sidney Molnar '22 started in goal for the third time in the last four games and needed to make just 12 saves. Molnar has a 1.86 goals against average and .915 save percentage in five starts.

Giuttari put the Continentals in front with 4:12 left in the third period on assists from Allie Curry '23 and Holden. Curry passed the puck to Giuttari and she tapped it into the back of the net in stride. Nancy Loh '22 had almost given Hamilton the lead about three minutes earlier when her shot hit the post.

Oswego had a golden opportunity a little more than a minute after Giuttari's goal when a Hamilton player was sent to the penalty box for tripping with 2:32 remaining, and another was sent off for cross-checking nine seconds later. The Lakers enjoyed their 5-on-3 advantage for just 18 seconds when an Oswego player was whistled for tripping.

Despite the penalty the Lakers were still on the power play, and they regained their two-skater advantage with 56 seconds to go when they pulled goaltender Rachael Farmer (31 saves). Eventually both penalties on the Continentals expired and they actually had a power play for 18 seconds with 23 seconds left while Oswego continued to play with an empty net. The Lakers mustered four shots with just one on goal in the final 2:30.

Oswego grabbed the lead with 1:09 remaining in the first period on a power-play goal by Eryn Stewart on assists from Megan Teachout and Kate Randazzo.

The Lakers held the edge until there was 6:11 left in the second period. Holden tallied a power-play goal on a third-chance rebound after a shot by Abby Kuhns '23 was blocked and another by Hyla Mosher '23 was stopped by Farmer. Mosher and Jess Haviland '21 picked up the assists. The Continentals had a commanding 15-1 shot advantage in the period.

Hamilton returns home to Russell Sage Rink for a NESCAC game against nationally ranked No. 2 Middlebury College on Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
