Box Score Tufts University's Luke Rogers posted a double-double and the Jumbos recorded a 78-72 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Tufts' Cousens Gym on Friday night.
Both teams received votes in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. Hamilton travels to Lewiston, Maine, for another conference contest at Bates College on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.
The Continentals (11-4, 1-2 NESCAC) held a 52-47 advantage on the glass. Hamilton grabbed its largest lead of seven points at 15-8 midway through the first half when Nick Osarenren '22 found Elliott Tirbaso '22 for a layup. The Jumbos scored the next 10 points and neither team led by more than four the rest of the half. Tufts ended the half with five straight points and took a 34-33 edge into the break.
The Jumbos (12-3, 2-0) went 23-for-45 at the free-throw line as 33 fouls were called on the Continentals. Tufts scored 16 points off 11 Hamilton turnovers.
The Continentals took their last lead at 39-38 on two Kena Gilmour '20 free throws and forged the last tie at 44-44 on a 3-pointer by Gilmour with 13:57 left. The Jumbos scored the next six points and led the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by Tyler Aronson gave Tufts its first double-digit advantage at 58-46 with 9:33 remaining, and the Jumbos went up by as many as 15 points on two occasions in the final three minutes.
Gilmour finished with a double-double on 26 points and 10 rebounds. He scored 20 of those points in the second half. Mark Lutz '20 chipped in 10 points and Spencer Kendall '21 added nine points, two steals and two blocked shots. Mike McEneney '21 and Osarenren blocked two shots apiece as Hamilton finished with seven.
Rogers had 21 points, 16 boards and five blocked shots for Tufts. Aronson dropped in 16 points and Brennan Morris made four 3-pointers and ended up with 13 points.
