Schmidt '20 scores two, lifts men's soccer to season-opening win

Box Score

Hamilton College's Jefri Schmidt '20 scored twice and the Continentals posted a 2-0 non-conference win against SUNY Oswego at Hamilton's Love Field on Tuesday.

Hamilton was playing its first game of the season while the Lakers evened their record at 1-1-0. The Continentals improve to 15-2-3 against Oswego under head coach Perry Nizzi.

After a scoreless first half, Hamilton wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the second. Sam Dils '22 took the kickoff and the Continentals surged into the Lakers' zone. Jeff Plump '20 fired a low shot from the left side of the box that was denied by an outstretched Brian Terra (4 saves), but Schmidt was waiting out front and tapped the rebound into the lower-right corner of the goal just 29 seconds after the break.

Schmidt tallied his second goal of the night and the 11th of his Buff and Blue career in the 54th minute. Plump moved down the left side of Oswego's zone and fed the ball inward to Roth Wetzel '22 who turned and dished a pass to Schmidt at the top-right corner of the penalty area. Schmidt ripped a shot that was headed for the upper-left corner but Terra made a diving save. The senior captain followed his own rebound and tucked the bouncing ball inside the right post.

Thomas Benson '22 made five of his seven saves in the second half including two big stops in the final minutes for his sixth shutout in 13 career starts. Benson left the goal area in the 83rd minute to deflect a loose ball rolling into the penalty box. Oswego's Omar Espinoza denied Benson's attempt, but the sophomore goalkeeper quickly recovered and punched Espinoza's shot attempt out-of-bounds. The Lakers threatened again in the 88th minute with a free kick from 40 yards out. Oswego's Anthony Paris one-timed the lofted ball towards the lower-left corner and Benson gobbled up the shot before it crossed the goal line.

The Continentals host Bates College on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1:30 p.m. for their first NESCAC game this season.
