Box Score Hamilton College's Maddie Beitler '21 scored two goals and the Continentals shut out the William Smith College Herons 3-0 in a non-conference game under the lights of William Smith's McCooey Field on Wednesday night.
Hamilton (3-3 overall) jumped on the scoreboard at 10:03 in the first quarter when Tracey Stafford '23 stole the ball away from the Herons in transition and passed ahead to Beitler who split the defenders and beat Stephanie Stone (2 saves) to the lower-right corner.
Lizzie Clarke '20 made it a 2-0 game less than a minute later. Lexi Takashima '22 inserted the penalty corner to the left of Stone, and Clark ripped a shot that was tipped by Maura Holden '23 into the back of the cage at 10:57.
Alexandra DeVito (5 saves) relieved Stone in the final minute of the opening period and held Hamilton scoreless in the second.
Beitler scored her second of the night after Michaela Giuttari '20 knocked the ball away from the Herons at midfield. The ball rolled ahead to Beitler as the duo sprinted forward for a two-on-one, and Beitler tucked the ball inside the left pipe with 4:14 left in the third quarter.
The Herons' (2-5) best scoring chance came on a penalty corner with 8:18 remaining in the fourth quarter. Sophie Craig received the pass and golfed a shot towards the lower-left corner but Maggie Reville '22 (3 saves) made a toe save to preserve her first collegiate shutout.
Giuttari had a chance to notch her 50th career goal in the 56th minute. Hamilton cleared the ball out of its defensive end as Giuttari used her speed to beat the defenders into the shooting arc, but her shot clanged off the right post.
Hamilton returns to NESCAC action on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. when it hosts nationally ranked No. 19 Colby College on Goodfriend Field.
