Women's soccer threatens No. 2/3 Middlebury in 1-1 overtime draw

Box Score

Hamilton College and nationally ranked No. 2/3 Middlebury College battled to a 1-1 double-overtime NESCAC draw at Middlebury's Dragone Field on Saturday.

Hamilton (3-2-1, 1-2-1 NESCAC) handed Middlebury (5-0-1, 2-0-1) its first non-victory of the season. The Panthers have outscored their opponents 14-3 this season, while the Continentals edge their foes 17-8 on the scoreboard.

Hamilton took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Emma Gaulin '23 threw the ball into Cat Gambino '21 in front of Middlebury's bench and Gambino passed ahead to Caroline Dawson '23 down the left sideline. Dawson raced uncontested into the left side of the penalty box and delivered a centering pass. Hyla Mosher '23 won the battle with the defender in the goal area and found the back of the net at 18:48. Mosher is tied with Tufts' Liz Reed at the top of the NESCAC leaderboard with six goals and she is tied for second with 13 points.

The Panthers knotted the score with 2:51 remaining in the opening half on a goal by Simone Ameer. Hamilton attempted to play a long ball back to Rachel Pike '21, but Ameer won the footrace, one-touched the ball around Pike and dribbled it into the open net. Pike finished with a season-high eight saves.

After a scoreless second half, the teams entered extra time. Three minutes into the first overtime, Middlebury's Gretchen McGrath had a chance from 12 yards out, but her attempt was denied by Pike. Eliza Van Voorhis almost ended the match in the 96th minute, but her hard shot from the far side following a corner kick was again turned away by Pike.

Mosher nearly ended the contest with 6:30 remaining in the second overtime period. Dawson once again attacked from the left side with a cross into the box. Mosher connected and her header sailed towards the upper-left corner of the goal but Ursula Alwang (4 saves) just managed to punch the ball up and over the crossbar.

In celebration of Fallcoming and Family Weekend, the Continentals host Colby College for a NESCAC match on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 11 a.m.
