Volleyball finishes Brockport Invite with a flourish

Hamilton College defeated SUNY Brockport and the University of Rochester as the Continentals wrapped up the 2019 SUNY Brockport Volleyball Invitational at Brockport's Vlogianitis Gymnasium on Saturday.

Hamilton (4-3 overall) rallied from two sets down to prevail in five against the hosts (16-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-12). The Continentals swept Rochester after tough first and second sets (26-24, 25-23, 25-18). Brockport is 4-7 overall and the Yellowjackets dropped to 6-6. Hamilton travels to local rival Utica College for a non-conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.

Deirdre Corrigan '23 led the Continentals with season highs of 18 kills, 18 digs and four service aces. Giuliana Rankin '20 smashed 14 kills and Dorothy Poucher '21 served three aces. Rankin blasted her 600th career kill. Jo Dine '22 continued to impress with 38 assists and 10 digs and Nikki Matsuoka '21 led all players with 24 digs. Matsuoka notched her 700th career dig during the match. Kendall Searcy '20 chipped in 10 digs and Jane Fanning '22 and Kendall Boxe '22 recorded one solo block apiece.

Corrigan and Rankin paced the Hamilton attack with 10 kills apiece and Poucher hammered eight. Dine dished out 29 assists and smacked three aces. Maddy LaPoint '22 posted a career-high five aces and Matsuoka registered 20 digs. Matsuoka is tied for first in the NESCAC with 125 digs and is second with 5.21 per set. Boxe, Dine and Poucher helped lead the defense with two blocks apiece.

Rochester led 23-20 in the first set but the Continentals scored six of the last seven points. Boxe had two kills and came up with the solo block that closed out the set.

Hamilton jumped out to a 10-2 cushion in the second set but Rochester came all the way back to take the lead at 22-21. The Continentals scored four of the next five points and closed out the set thanks to three kills by Rankin.

The score was tied at 15-15 in the third set and the Yellowjackets were still within one at 18-17 when Hamilton clinched the match by scoring seven of the last eight points. Corrigan started the rally with a pair of kills and Dine ended it with a pair of aces.
