Field hockey gets first NESCAC win in clash between ranked teams

Box Score

Four Hamilton College players scored goals and Sarah Pierpont '21 picked up two assists in the Continentals' 4-1 NESCAC win against the Amherst College Mammoths at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on Saturday.

The nationally ranked No. 19 Continentals (2-2, 1-1 NESCAC) had allowed six goals in dropping their last two contests, but Maggie Reville '22 made a season-high six saves in her best game so far at Hamilton. One of Reville's stops was an incredible kick save off her right leg on a penalty stroke taken by Laura Schwartzman early in the third quarter. Kiera Wax '23 added a defensive save. The Continentals will be on the road at Middlebury College for more conference action on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m.

No. 17 Amherst (2-2, 0-2) surrendered the most goals they have allowed since the Mammoths lost 4-3 in overtime against Hamilton on Oct. 6 last year. Beth Williamson scored her third goal and Emilie Flamme turned away six shots. Flamme was pulled for the final 6:15 in the fourth quarter in favor of an extra field player. Amherst hosts Endicott College in non-conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

The Continentals led 2-0 at the half but the Mammoths put the pressure on after the break as they took 12 shots and were awarded 10 penalty corners during the last 30 minutes. Amherst was finally rewarded for their persistence early in the fourth quarter. Schwartzman inserted the ball on a penalty corner to Williamson and she blasted a shot into the back of the cage with 13:46 left. Williamson had clanged a hard shot off the left post on another corner early in the third quarter.

Hamilton restored its two-goal lead with 6:16 remaining. Tracey Stafford '23 scored her first goal with the Continentals on a nice pass from Pierpont, who is tied for the team lead with three helpers. The Mammoths took out Flamme after Stafford's goal and eventually Hamilton was able to add an insurance tally following back-to-back corners. Lizzie Clarke '20 had her shot blocked near the edge of the arc and Maura Holden '23 eventually collected the loose ball and whacked it into the cage for her second goal this season with 3:16 to go.

The Continentals struck early on the second goal this year by Cat Donahue '21. Pierpont inserted the ball on a corner and Donahue stopped it and smashed a shot into the back of the cage just 1:17 into the first quarter.

Hamilton went up by two goals shortly after another corner early in the second quarter. Pierpont inserted the ball but it squirted away and Michaela Giuttari '20 had to work it back into the arc. Holden had a shot deflected away by Flamme and eventually the ball found its way to Maddie Beitler '21 near the right post. Beitler batted a shot past Flamme for her team-high fourth goal with 13:51 left in the second. Amherst had two corners in the final minute of the first half but Reville came up with two saves and kept the Mammoths off the scoreboard.
