Box Score Hamilton College opened up the 2019 SUNY Brockport Volleyball Invitational with a 3-0 non-conference loss to Ithaca College on Friday night at Brockport's Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
The Bombers -- ranked 22nd in this week's Division III Top 25 coaches poll -- improved their record to 4-3 overall. Two of Ithaca's losses this season have been to other nationally ranked teams.
The Continentals (2-3 overall) face the hosts Saturday at 11:30 a.m. before taking on the University of Rochester at 2 p.m.
Hamilton went point-for-point with the Bombers through the first two sets, falling 30-28 and 25-23. Ithaca took the match with a 25-16 score in set three.
The first set was tied at 1-1, 3-3, 5-5, 6-6 and 11-11 before Ithaca gained a 16-11 lead with five straight points. The Continentals remained unfazed as they battled back with five straight points of their own to get within one at 20-19. Hamilton tied the score five more times including at 28-28 before the Bombers scored two straight and clinched the set.
Ithaca built a five-point lead again in the second set at 16-11 before Hamilton inched its way back. An Ithaca service error turned the tables and Kayla Self '21 immediately took the momentum with a service ace that pulled the Continentals within 17-13. Three kills by Deirdre Corrigan '23 got Hamilton within a point at 19-18 and Jo Dine '22 tied it with one of her personal-best three service aces. A kill by Giuliana Rankin '20 made the score 24-23 but a kill by Ithaca's Reagan Stone ended the set. Ithaca opened the third set with a 16-4 run and quickly closed out the match.
Corrigan led Hamilton's offense with 12 kills and added two service aces and nine digs. Dorothy Poucher '21 chipped in six kills and two aces, and Rankin had five kills. Dine posted career highs in both assists (21) and digs (12). Self and Nikki Matsuoka '21 recorded 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
The Bombers received 14 kills from Stone. Caitlyn Floyd recorded a team-high 34 assists and 14 digs. Grace Isaksen helped the defense with 11 digs and Jordyn Lyn Hayashi had 10 digs and two aces.
