Radziwon '20 scores 1st of the season in men's hockey NESCAC tie

Box Score

Both teams scored one goal in each regulation period and the Hamilton College Continentals and the Middlebury College Panthers battled to a 3-3 NESCAC tie at Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Friday night.

With the final day of conference games on Saturday, Feb. 16, Hamilton (11-9-3, 9-5-3 NESCAC) is fifth in the NESCAC standings and hosts nationally ranked No. 14/14 Williams College on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Ephs are tied for third with Amherst College in the conference standings. Middlebury (8-11-4, 5-8-4) is currently in seventh place and travels to Amherst on Saturday. The top eight teams in the conference qualify for the 2019 NESCAC Men's Hockey Championship and the top four teams host a quarterfinal on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Cameron Radziwon '20 briefly gave Hamilton a 3-2 lead at 16:35 in the third period. Jason Brochu '19 stole the puck away from the Panthers in Hamilton's end and passed up to Radziwon charging into the offensive zone. Radziwon made a centering pass to Rory Gagnon '19 who put a shot on net that was denied but Radziwon was there to tuck in the rebound for his first goal this season.

Middlebury pulled Brian Ketchabaw (29 saves) from the net to gain an extra skater with 1:38 left and the gamble paid off. Michael Fahie dug the puck out of the right corner and passed out to Kamil Tkaczuk at the faceoff dot. Tkaczuk passed across the slot to Jimmy McKee at the back post. Anthony Tirabassi (32 saves) turned away McKee's first shot but his second found the back of the nylon with 56 seconds remaining in regulation and sent the game into overtime.

The Panthers had a 13-2 shot advantage in the third period and a 6-0 edge in overtime. Hamilton's best chance to score in the extra period came just 15 seconds after the faceoff. The Continentals surged into the zone with a 3-on-2 advantage but Middlebury's Matt Danner dove back to block the shot attempt by Nick Ursitti '20.

Emack Bentley gave Middlebury a 1-0 lead 3:49 after the opening faceoff but Hamilton responded with two power-play goals for a 2-1 lead early in the second period.

Josh Labonte '21 collected the puck behind Hamilton's net and passed to Sterling Bray '20 in the neutral zone. Bray skated the puck into Middlebury's end and connected with Joey Moore '22 for a give-and-go, allowing Bray to sneak behind the defenders and redirect Moore's pass into the net for his fifth goal at 10:47 of the first.

Labonte put the home team up 2-1 with a goal 1:55 into the second stanza. Moore passed the puck from the left point through the slot to Bray at the back post. Ketchabaw made the intial stop but the rebound bounced to the right faceoff dot for Labonte who snapped a shot that clanged off the bottom of the crossbar and passed the plane of the goal line for his second goal.

Middlebury tied the score again with 1:29 left in the second. Owen Powers dug the puck out of the right corner and passed back to Alex Heinritz at the point. Tirabassi stopped Heinritz's shot attempt but Cole Joslin grabbed the rebound and placed the puck inside the back-left post.
