Box Score The nationally ranked No. 11 Hamilton College Continentals defeated the Bates College Bobcats 92-76 in NESCAC action at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday night.
Hamilton (18-2, 4-2 NESCAC) racked up 27 second-chance points, had a 48-29 advantage on the glass and totaled 23 assists on 32 baskets.
Three Continentals recorded double-doubles. Kena Gilmour '20 led the way with 24 points and added 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Peter Hoffmann '19 tallied 22 points and 10 rebounds, both season-highs, and dished out four assists. Michael Grassey '19 posted 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Sayo Denloye '20 and Mark Lutz '20 both finished 3-for-5 from 3-point range for nine points each. Denloye also had five assists. Andrew Groll '19 collected eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Jeff Spellman guided Bates (6-14, 3-5) with 22 points and six assists. Nick Lynch added 14 points and eight rebounds. Kody Greenhalgh's eight steals was a game high and he had 10 points, and Tom Coyne scored 11 points.
Hamilton jumped out to an 8-0 lead as Grassey hit a 3-pointer at 19:51, Doyle followed with a trifecta at 19:16 and Hoffmann grabbed an offensive board and banked in a layup at 17:59. Greenhalgh put Bates on the scoreboard after he hit one of his two free throws at 17:21 and then immediately grabbed a steal and found Spellman for a layup, making the score 8-3 at 17:02. Grassey extended Hamilton's lead to 10 points at 16-6 after he drilled back-to-back jumpers from beyond the arc at 14:26 and 14:07.
The Bobcats got within three points at 20-17 with 11:40 left in the first half after Brandon Galloway scored six unanswered points. There were four ties and four lead changes during the next 6:30. Hamilton took the lead for good at 36-34 on two free throws by Gilmour at 4:36 and Hoffmann followed with five straight points to extend the advantage to seven. Lutz swished a 3-pointer at 1:23 and Hoffmann rolled in a layup with 50 seconds left to give the Continentals a 46-38 edge at the half. Hoffmann scored 17 of his 22 points in the first half.
Spellman got the Bobcats within five points at 51-46 with a 3-pointer at 17:08. Hamilton responded with a 12-2 run that kicked off with a Grassey jumper at 16:52 and finished with a Gilmour layup at 14:16 for a 15-point cushion at 63-48. Hamilton extended the lead with eight unanswered points from 11:04 to 10:14. The run started when Gilmour dished the ball off to Spencer Kendall '21 underneath the basket and Kendall rattled the rim with a two-handed dunk. Lutz and Nick Osarenren '22 ended the streak with back-to-back downtown buckets. Lutz followed with another 3-pointer with 8:06 remaining to give Hamilton its largest lead of 22 points at 74-52.
Hamilton is right back on the court on Saturday, Feb. 2, hosting Tufts University at 3 p.m. In celebration of Senior Day, the Continentals will recognize Tim Doyle '19, Grassey, Hoffmann and Groll during halftime.
