Women's hoops halts Hawks' win streak and rallies for road win

Box Score

Hamilton College's Liz Arnold '22 recorded her second double-double of the season and the Continentals posted a 69-63 comeback victory against Hartwick College at Hartwick's Lambros Arena on Wednesday night.

Hamilton improved its overall record to 5-1 and snapped the Hawks' four-game win streak. The Continentals trailed by as many as 11 points in the middle of the second quarter before they took the lead for good with a 19-6 run that closed the quarter and gave them a 34-32 halftime advantage.

Carly O'Hern '20 led Hamilton with a season-high 19 points -- her highest point total since dropping in a career-high 21 against Norwich University last season. The senior shooting guard drained four of her eight 3-pointers and finished 7 of 11 from the floor. Arnold tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Kelcie Zarle '22 finished with 14 points and six assists. Scout Lansing '21 dished out seven helpers and took away four steals, Marie Steiner '20 contributed eight points off the bench, and Kayla Glemaud '21 brought down seven rebounds and blocked two shots.

Four Hawks scored in double figures with Molly Kirby leading the way with 17 points. Mary Schoenherr had 13 points and five assists, Maggie Kirby dropped in 12 points, and Kelly Pine totaled 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Giuliana Pritchard grabbed 10 of her 14 rebounds on the defensive end, handed out six assists and blocked four shots.

Hartwick (4-3 overall) had a 17-12 lead after the opening quarter and led 26-15 with 6:26 left in the second quarter before Hamilton began to battle back with eight unanswered points. Steiner cut the deficit to nine at 5:40, Arnold changed the score to 26-19 with 5:13 remaining, Zarle made it a five-point game at 4:31 when she laid the ball in and Arnold finished the run with a layup at 4:06. O'Hern sunk a 3-pointer at 2:01 to get the Continentals within one, but a layup by Hartwick's Schoenherr returned the three-point lead to the Hawks. Arnold tied the score at 32-32 with a 3-pointer at 1:30 and Claire Sehring '22 banked in a layup with five seconds remaining for Hamilton's two-point halftime lead.

After Hartwick's Pritchard opened the third quarter with a layup, O'Hern scored eight straight points featuring two 3-pointers to give Hamilton a cushion. The Continentals had a 10-point lead for the first time with 4:59 left in the third when Mackenzie Aldridge '20 placed in a layup. Hartwick crawled back to within a point on a deep jumper by Schoenherr with 2:52 remaining in the fourth quarter. A Zarle 3-pointer with 59 seconds left gave Hamilton a 65-61 edge, and the Continentals sealed the win on the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds.

Hamilton stays on the road for another non-conference tilt at Houghton College on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
