Box Score Amherst College scored four goals in the first period and the Mammoths went on to post a 5-2 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Amherst's Orr Rink on Saturday night. The contest was the season opener for both teams.
Hamilton got on the scoreboard at 9:31 in the second period. Josh Labonte '21 rifled a shot from the point that bounced off the right leg of Giancarlo Ventre (16 saves). Sterling Bray '20 gathered the rebound, pulled the puck around Ventre's skate and popped it into the open net. The goal was the 10th of Bray's collegiate career.
Nick Ursitti '20 got the Continentals within three with his 24th career goal at 11:38 in the second. Hamilton's offense earned a 3-on-2 situation as Joey Moore '22 passed across the slot to Bray who found Ursitti at the back post for a one-timer into the net.
Hamilton called Anthony Tirabassi '20 (30 saves) to the bench with 52 seconds remaining to gain the extra skater. The Continentals were able to get off two shots, but Ryan Wilson blocked the first and Ventre turned away the second.
Amherst's first period goals came off the sticks of Joey Verkerke at 1:02, Connor Merrill at 3:39, Nick Bondra at 4:07 and Pieter von Steinberg at 11:31. The Mammoths tacked on their fifth goal at 9:07 in the second period.
Hamilton hits its home ice on Sunday, Nov. 17 for a non-conference tilt against Bryn Athyn College at 5:30 p.m. at Russell Sage Rink.
