Hughes '20 nets 1st career goal, women's soccer soars past Hawks

Box Score

Hamilton College scored four goals in the second half and the Continentals posted a 5-0 non-conference win over the Hartwick College Hawks at Hamilton's Love Field on Wednesday.

Kristin Hughes '20 registered her first career goal in the 86th minute to round out the scoring. Sydney Kim '21 crossed the ball to Hughes who was waiting at the backside of the goal area and the senior defender buried the shot inside the opposite-left post.

The Continentals (7-2-1 overall) -- ranked eighth in the New England Region by the United Soccer Coaches -- remain unbeaten in their last six contests and have blanked their last three opponents by a combined score of 16-0.

Five players scored for Hamilton and each goal had at least one assist. The Continentals' unselfish play has them ranked third in all of Division III with an average of 3.44 assists per game. Additionally, Hamilton ranks 11th in points per game with an average of 10.78 and is 14th in scoring offense with 3.67 goals per game.

The Continentals possessed the ball 65 percent of the time as they enjoyed a 28-2 shot advantage and had a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. Hamilton leads the nation in shots per game (29.00) and ranks second in shots on goal per game (16.22).

Rachel Pike '21 registered one save as she picked up her second consecutive shutout and the sixth of her Hamilton career. Hartwick's Cassandra Robataille stopped a career-high 11 shots before she was relieved by Sara Staup (0 saves) for the final 11 minutes.

Caroline Dawson '23 scored the lone goal of the first half at 16:35. Emma Gaulin '23 dribbled the ball along the left sideline, passed ahead to Dawson at the end line, and Dawson threaded the needle with a shot that banked off the back post and into the nylon.

Just 3:48 into the second half, Allie Reed '23 doubled Hamilton's lead off a feed from Hughes. Hamilton moved the ball along the outskirts of Hartwick's box to Hughes in the opposite corner. Hughes lofted a high cross towards the penalty hash that Robataille attempted to knock away, but Reed was there to fire the ball into the upper-left corner. Hughes started the day tied for 23rd in Division III with an average of 0.67 assists per game.

Cat Gambino '21 scored her team-leading ninth goal in the 57th minute. After a failed clear attempt by the Hawks, Rose McCullough '23 gathered the loose ball and launched a cross to the hash mark where Gambino one-timed the bouncing ball past Robataille. The assist was the first of McCullough's career.

Hamilton's fourth goal came in the 77th minute. Mackenzie Christensen '22 controlled the ball at midfield, sent a long forwarding pass up to Gambino and she redirected the ball to a charging Alex Fontana '20. Fontana was all alone as she knocked the ball into the lower-right corner.

The Continentals hit the road for a NESCAC game at Trinity College on Saturday, Oct. 12 before returning to Love Field the following day for another conference matchup against nationally ranked No. 13 Tufts University. Both contests kick off at 11 a.m.
