Donahue '21 scores equalizer in NESCAC field hockey OT loss

Box Score

Bowdoin College's Abby Bashaw scored twice, including the game-winner with 2:35 remaining in the first sudden-victory overtime period, and lifted the Polar Bears to a 3-2 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Bowdoin's Ryan Field on Saturday.

Elle Brine deked around a Hamilton defender along the left side of the arc, sent a centering pass towards the goal and Bashaw redirected the ball past a diving Maggie Reville '22 (18 saves).

The Continentals (3-6, 1-5 NESCAC) were facing a two-goal halftime deficit before scoring back-to-back goals off two penalty corners in the third quarter. Lexi Takashima '22 cut the deficit in half with 4:35 remaining when she batted in a rebound, and Cat Donahue '21 tied the score at 2-2 just 1:07 later when she drilled a shot off the insert from Maura Holden '23. Hamilton's last three contests have been decided in overtime against nationally ranked opponents.

The nationally ranked No. 8 Polar Bears (8-1, 5-1) scored their first goal 3:56 into the first quarter. Bowdoin stole the ball away just outside Hamilton's arc and a quick transition resulted in a goal by Bashaw off the feed from Peyton Jackson.

Hamilton's Maddie Beitler '21 nearly tied the score in the seventh minute when Maddie Ferrucci (3 saves) was down on the turf. Beitler put a shot on goal but Beth Koeller made a defensive save and preserved Bowdoin's 1-0 lead after the first quarter.

Bowdoin had another scoring chance with 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Bowdoin's Elizabeth Growney controlled the ball along the left side of the field for a two-player breakaway on Reville, but Reville challenged the attack with a sliding save and the Hamilton defense swept the ball out of danger.

The Polar Bears gained their 2-0 lead off a quick reset from the top of the penalty arc. Bowdoin golfed a shot to the front of the goal area and Elizabeth Growney tapped the deflected ball out of the air and past the outstretched arm of Reville with 5:08 left in the second stanza.

Hamilton travels to Trinity College on Saturday, Oct. 12 for a NESCAC game at 11 a.m.
