Men's hockey battles to 3-3 NESCAC tie against No. 7/9 Trinity

Box Score

Both teams scored twice in the first period and once in the third as the Hamilton College Continentals and Trinity College Bantams battled to a 3-3 overtime tie at Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink in NESCAC action on Friday night.

Anthony Tirabassi '20 made 43 saves for the Continentals (8-7-2, 6-3-2 NESCAC). Hamilton and Trinity also tied 2-2 earlier this season back on Nov. 30, 2018.

Trinity (10-3-4, 6-2-3) -- ranked seventh by D3hockey.com and ninth by USCHO.com -- held a 46-35 shot advantage, including 22 in the first period.

After a four-goal first period and a scoreless second, the teams entered the third deadlocked at 2-2. Lucas Michaud put the Bantams ahead 4:05 into the period, but Hamilton's Jon Stickel '19 scored the game-tying goal with 4:38 left -- his first goal of the season. Stickel whipped a centering pass from the left corner to the front of the net and the puck bounced off the back of the Trinity's goalie leg and into the goal.

Trinity opened the scoring 7:18 into the first period. Dylan Healey won the faceoff to the right of Tirabassi and dropped the puck back to Nicholas Fiorentino who wristed a shot into the upper-right corner.

Nick Ursitti '20 evened the score just over two minutes later after Trinity's Barclay Gammill headed to the penalty box for hooking at 9:11. It took Hamilton just eight seconds to capitalize on the extra-man opportunity. Jason Brochu '19 won the faceoff to the left of Jonah Capriotti (32 saves) and Ursitti passed the loose puck back to Nick Rutigliano '21. Rutigliano passed across the blue line to Rory Gagnon '19 who fired a low pass towards the front of the net that Ursitti tipped into the nylon.

The high-scoring first period continued as Cole Poliziani netted his third of the season to put Trinity ahead 2-1 at 11:33. Tirabassi turned away back-to-back shots by Timothy Weinstein and Poliziani before Poliziani tucked in his own rebound.

Hamilton tied the score again with 3:30 remaining when Brochu tipped in a slap shot from Sean Allen '21. Gagnon won the faceoff to the left of Capriotti and Chad Varney '22 dug the puck out of the corner and passed back to Gagnon. Gagnon then slid the puck across the slot to Allen for a one-timer.

The Continentals are back at Russell Sage Rink on Saturday, Jan. 26 for another NESCAC contest against Wesleyan University at 3 p.m.
