Box Score Hamilton College's Jason Brochu '19 scored 2:11 into the sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Continentals to a 3-2 comeback NESCAC victory over the Amherst College Mammoths at Amherst's Orr Rink on Friday night.
Hamilton improves to 8-6-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the NESCAC. Amherst drops to 7-5-2 and 5-3-2 in conference action.
Capitalizing on a Mammoths boarding penalty in overtime, Brochu secured the victory for the Continentals. Rory Gagnon '19 worked the puck around the zone to Brochu at the top of the right circle and he sent a laser of a wrister past Michael Cullen (20 saves) to lift Hamilton to victory.
After a scoreless first period, Amherst broke the deadlock 7:31 into the second. Mitchell Shults denied a clear attempt at the blue line and slid the puck up to Sean Wrenn who fired a shot over the pad of Anthony Tirabassi '20. Tirabassi racked up a career-high 52 saves for his seventh win of the season.
Andrew Court '22 tied the score with his first collegiate goal at 8:01 in the third. The Continentals had a three-on-two advantage as they surged into the offensive zone. The puck took an awkward bounce off the boards and Cullen came out to clear it away but Court fired the rebound into the nylon.
Wrenn tallied his second of the night at 11:48 to put the home squad ahead 2-1, but Nick Rutigliano '21 was the last-second hero for the second time this season. Tirabassi headed to the bench for an extra skater with 1:25 remaining, and in the final seconds of regulation Justin Felhaber '21 won the faceoff to the right of Cullen. Rutigliano gathered the puck and snapped a shot into the net with less than one second left. Rutigliano also scored the game-winner with three seconds left in the third period in a 4-3 victory over Middlebury College back on Dec. 7.
Hamilton travels to SUNY Cortland on Monday, Jan. 21 for a non-conference game at 3 p.m.
