Felhaber '21 hat trick leads men's hockey to NESCAC victory

Box Score

Hamilton College's Justin Felhaber '21 scored a career-high three goals and the Continentals posted a 7-4 NESCAC win over the Connecticut College Camels at Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Friday night.

Hamilton (6-6-1, 4-3-1 NESCAC) has yet to lose on Friday this season, holding a 4-0-1 record. Conn. College dropped to 0-6-1 in conference play and 4-8-1 overall.

Conn. College's Anthony Quatieri scored his first goal of the game 2:43 into the first period to give the Camels a 1-0 lead. Kyle Moss denied the clear attempt by Hamilton and fired a low shot that bounced through traffic and Quatieri slammed the loose puck past Anthony Tirabassi '20 (28 saves).

The Continentals' responded with five unanswered goals starting at 8:02 in the first period and ending 5:03 into the second.

Felhaber tied the score with his first of the season. Stephen Cochrane '20 sent a cross-ice pass off the boards to Jon Stickel '19 as he raced into the Camels' zone. Stickel caught up to the puck and delivered a centering pass to Felhaber in the slot for a one-timer into the open net.

Teddy Simson '21 and Sam Jones '20 gave Hamilton a 3-1 lead after the first period with the first goals of their Buff and Blue careers. Sterling Bray '20 picked up the assist on Simson's goal at 16:24, and Jones scored unassisted after he intercepted a pass at the blue line and wristed the puck into the opposite upper-right corner at 17:41.

Just 1:57 into the second, Jon Beniers '21 picked up his second goal of the season while Bray served up his second helper of the night. Bray's hustle along the boards prevented the puck from leaving the Continentals' offensive zone and he dropped a pass back to Beniers. Beniers skated along the left circle and ripped a shot underneath the crossbar.

Felhaber completed Hamilton's five-goal run with the eventual game-winner 5:03 into the second period. Ian Nichols '19 took the initial shot on goal and Stickel fed the rebound to Felhaber who knocked the puck off the left pad of Avery Gobbo (10 saves) and into the goal. Connor Rodericks (17 saves) immediately replaced Gobbo with Conn. College now trailing 5-1.

The Camels pulled within 5-3 on back-to-back goals by Quatieri and Ryan Petti. Hamilton pushed its lead back to three going into the second intermission as Chad Varney '22 netted the first goal of his collegiate career at 10:38. Nick Rutigliano '21 and Jordi Jefferson '22 picked up the assists.

Conn. College made the score 6-4 midway through the third period on a power-play score by Greg Pezza. Felhaber completed the first hat trick of his collegiate career with help from Nichols and Jones on an empty-net goal with 33 seconds left.

Hamilton is right back on the ice on Saturday for another NESCAC home matchup against Tufts University at 3 p.m.
