No. 4 men's basketball tops SUNY Polytechnic by 40 points

Six Continentals scored in double figures and nationally ranked No. 4 Hamilton College topped the SUNY Polytechnic Wildcats 102-62 on Thursday night at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House.

Hamilton (8-0 overall) wraps up its fall semester schedule at home against Elmira College on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 4 p.m.

Kena Gilmour '20 totaled 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Michael Grassey '19 and Mark Lutz '20 both dropped in 13 points. Peter Hoffmann '19 banked in 12 points, dished out four assists and grabbed three steals. Tim Doyle '19 contributed 10 points and four assists. Mike McEneney '21 added a personal-best 10 points, and Nick Osarenren '22 tallied nine points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

The Continentals grabbed a season-high 16 steals, served up 27 assists and scored 40 points off 26 turnovers.

Josh Gregory shot 10-of-11 from the free-throw line and recorded a game-high 21 points and 10 boards for SUNY Poly (1-6). Tyshaun Copper and Redell Freeman chipped in nine points apiece. Copper also brought down five rebounds and Freeman added four boards and four steals.

Hamilton started the game with 10 unanswered points for the quick lead and the Buff and Blue never looked back. Hoffmann kicked off the game with a layup, Doyle followed with a 3-pointer, Grassey dropped in a mid-range jumper and Gilmour drilled a downtown jumper at 17:15. The Continentals extended their lead to 20-7 with a 10-5 run capped off by a 3-pointer by Sayo Denloye '20 (6 points, 5 assists) at 14:11.

The Wildcats creeped to within 14 points at 36-22 after Gregory finished a layup, drew the foul and finished the 3-point play on the charity stripe at 6:42. Grassey responded with four straight points and Denloye and Hoffmann followed with back-to-back layups to complete an 8-0 run with 5:14 left in the first half. SUNY Poly narrowly outscored Hamilton 14-13 in the final five minutes as the Continentals took a 57-35 lead into halftime.

Hamilton blew the game open with a 13-0 run early in the second half. Gilmour floated in a layup and Doyle immediately grabbed a steal and slammed down a fast-break dunk, making the score 69-43 with 15:08 left. Hoffmann added a layup and followed with another steal and slam, McEneney delivered a turnaround jumper, Denloye blocked a shot and dished out the assist for Osarenren's 3-pointer to make the score 78-43 with 13:37 to go. Lutz scored seven of Hamilton's final 24 points, including his third 3-pointer, and Elliott Tirbaso '22 chipped in five points including a 3-pointer.
