Allen '21 nets the 1st of his career in No. 10/13 men's hockey victory

Box Score

The Hamilton College men's hockey team defeated visiting SUNY Canton 2-1 in a non-conference game on Sunday night at Russell Sage Rink.

The Continentals (10-5-1 overall) -- ranked 10th by D3hockey.com and 13th by USCHO.com – outshot the Roos 33-18. Canton's overall record fell to 5-12-2.

Sterling Bray '20 scored his first of the season 16:57 into the first period to give Hamilton a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. Canton collected the puck behind its own net and began to break out of the zone, but Sam Jones '20 stopped the Roos' progress at the red line. Jones grabbed the bouncing puck with his glove, skated into the Canton end, and passed to Bray at the far faceoff circle for a wrist shot over the glove of Austin Washkurak (31 saves).

Hamilton doubled its lead with a power-play goal 6:43 into the second period. Stephen Cochrane '20 passed to Sean Allen '21 at the point, and Allen skated around his defender to find Brandon Willett '18 in the slot for a give-and-go. Allen one-timed Willett's return pass inside the right pipe for the first goal of his Hamilton career.

The Roos cut their deficit in half just 11 seconds into a power-play opportunity late in the second period. Canton's Tyler Bullard won the faceoff to the left of Anthony Tirabassi '20 (17 saves). J.P. Langlois got the puck along the boards, passed to Joey Vocino at the point, and Vocino passed across the ice to Joe Deveny. Tirabassi denied Deveny's intial shot, but Josh Sova put away the rebound for his eighth goal with 1:26 remaining in the period.

Canton pulled Washkurak with 51 seconds remaining in the third period to gain the extra skater, but Hamilton held the Roos to just one shot that sailed over the net.

The Continentals (4-5-1 NESCAC) return to conference action next weekend as they travel to Connecticut for two games. Hamilton first faces No. 6/7 Trinity College (11-3-2, 8-1-1 NESCAC) on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. before taking on Wesleyan University (9-4-3, 5-3-2) on Sunday at 3 p.m.
