Box Score The nationally ranked No. 14 Hamilton College men's basketball team scored the last 13 points to take down visiting SUNY Geneseo 74-70 in a non-conference game at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Tuesday night.
Kena Gilmour '20 led Hamilton (15-0 overall) with 20 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Tim Doyle '19 dropped in 16 points and served up four assists. Michael Grassey '19 totaled eight points and six boards, and Peter Hoffmann '19 blocked three shots.
Quinn Carey drained a career-high 31 points with five threes and collected seven rebounds for Geneseo (8-7). Kevin Crockett scored 12 points, Tommy Eastman totaled eight points and eight rebounds, and Alex Merhige grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
The visitors jumped out to a 10-4 lead with 13:33 remaining in the first half before Gilmour grabbed a steal and banked a shot into the basket. Carey responded with a three-pointer for the Knights, but Jack Dwyer '18 pushed the tempo and got behind the defenders for a layup. Vince Conn '20 followed with back-to-back layups to complete a 6-0 run and get Hamilton within one point of the lead at 13-12, but Geneseo quickly gained back a 17-12 advantage.
Mark Lutz '19 drained one of his two three-pointers to cut the Continental deficit to 17-15 with 10:41 remaining in the half and ignited a 14-0 Hamilton run. The defense followed with three forced turnovers, and Gilmour tied the score at 17-all with a layup and completed the three-point play at the charity stripe to give the Continentals an 18-17 lead at 8:41. Joe Pucci '18 concluded the streak with a basket from deep range, giving Hamilton its largest lead at 26-17 with 7:23 remaining in the opening half. The Knights outscored the Continentals 17-8 in the final minutes and forced a 34-34 tie at halftime.
There were two ties and two lead changes in the opening two minutes of the second half. Back-to-back layups by Hoffmann and Doyle gave Hamilton a 41-38 lead at 17:16. The Knights tied the score four times at 14:44, 12:19, 10:27 and 9:33. Carey's layup at 9:33 made the score 55-55 and his three-pointer at 8:57 gave Geneseo the lead for the first time since 1:18 into the second half. The Knights put together a 12-6 run to gain their largest lead at 70-61.
Down by nine with 3:54 left and its perfect season in the balance, Hamilton turned to a full-court pressure defense in front of a packed house. The Continentals held the visitors scoreless as they went on a 13-0 run to close the game. Hoffmann started the rally with a layup and Gilmour's steal and 3-point play made it 70-66 with three minutes remaining. Gilmour scored from close range about a minute later and Doyle tied the score with two free throws with 1:21 to go. Grassey's post move and basket in the paint put the home team ahead to stay with 30 seconds left.
Gilmour sealed the victory when he went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe with three seconds remaining and grabbed his sixth steal of the night in the last second of the contest. Geneseo was 0 of 5 from the floor and committed three turnovers in the final 3:13.
Hamilton (3-0 NESCAC) returns to conference action as they travel to Amherst College (9-5, 1-2 NESCAC) on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m.
