Box Score Bowdoin College shot 60.7 percent from the field and the Polar Bears held on down the stretch for an 83-75 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Bowdoin's Morrell Gymnasium on Friday night.
Kena Gilmour '20 paced Hamilton (14-6, 3-4 NESCAC) with 19 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Gilmour hasn't started a single game this season but averages 12.3 points per contest.
Peter Hoffmann '19 posted his third career double-double -- all this season -- with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Continentals. Andrew Groll '19 chipped in 14 points, nine boards and three steals. Jack Dwyer '18 scored eight points and handed out seven assists, and Kyle Pitman '17 tied a season high with eight points and added three steals off the bench. Hamilton pulled down 18 offensive rebounds, which helped lead to 17 second-chance points. Hoffmann and Groll grabbed a total of 12 offensive boards themselves.
The Polar Bears' Jack Bors led all players with 22 points. Liam Farley dropped in 16 points and David Reynolds had 14 off the bench. Farley and Reynolds combined to go 14 of 17 from the floor. Jack Simonds -- the second-leading scorer in the NESCAC -- contributed 14 points and Tim Ahn dished out six assists. Hugh O'Neil contributed eight points and nine rebounds.
Bowdoin (11-9, 2-5) led for most of the opening 15 minutes of the first half. The Polar Bears were up by as many as eight points at 17-9 on a 3-pointer by Bors and at 19-11 on a Bors jumper. After a Farley layup put Bowdoin up by seven at 33-26 with 6:41 left, the Continentals roared back with a 10-0 run and took the lead. Pitman opened the spurt with a 3-pointer, made a steal and the layup and nailed another trifecta on the next offensive possession for a 34-33 edge. Pitman then came up with another steal and Dwyer's layup capped the run for a 36-33 advantage with 4:31 remaining.
The Polar Bears scored the next eight points and took the lead for good. Simonds drained a jumper, Neil Fuller added a shot from beyond the arc and Farley gave Bowdoin a 41-36 cushion on another basket from long range with 2:43 to go. The Polar Bears led 47-41 at the break as they were 20 of 31 from the floor including 5 of 9 from 3-point range during the first 20 minutes.
Bowdoin led by at least six points the entire second half. Reynolds capped an 8-0 run with a layup that gave the Polar Bears their largest advantage of the night of 15 points at 67-52 with 11:04 left. A Farley jumper matched that cushion at 69-54 a little more than a minute later.
Hamilton trailed 79-66 with 3:46 remaining but the Continentals clawed back to within six points thanks to a 9-2 spurt. Gilmour scored the first seven points and Hoffmann made it 81-75 on a layup with 1:16 to go. Hamilton couldn't get any closer as it was 0 of 6 from the field with a turnover in the final minute.
The Continentals aim to salvage a split on their trip to Maine on Saturday, Feb. 4 when they visit Colby College for another NESCAC game.
