Men's Ice Hockey

No. 7/9 men's hockey bounces back to beat Bowdoin

Box Score

The Hamilton College men's hockey team earned a split of its weekend series, posting a 3-1 win at Bowdoin College Saturday afternoon. The Continentals scored twice in the third period to raise their record to 13-3-4 overall and 7-3-4 in the NESCAC.

The Continentals are alone in third place in the NESCAC standings with two weekends left.

Neil Conway '18 and Richard Court '19 scored early in the third to break a 1-1 tie. Conway converted a feed from Brandon Willett '18 to give the Continentals their second lead of the day. Willett spun around and slid a backhanded pass to Conway on the opposite post. Conway put away the open shot to the glove side of Peter Cronin who was still on his angle to face Willett with 3:29 ticked off the clock in the third. Conway's goal was his sixth of the season. Willett and Conor Lamberti '17 each picked up their eighth assist on the play.

The Continentals added an insurance goal less than three minutes later as Court tipped home a shot taken by Jon Carkeek '17. Carkeek 's shot from the right point soared into traffic in front of the net where Court got his blade on the puck for his first goal of the season. Carkeek leads all NESCAC blue liners with 14 assists this winter.

The teams traded goals in the first two periods. The visitors got on the board first when Truman Landowski '17 streaked down the left boards with Tyler Bruneteau '18 matching him down the middle. Landowski fired a hard shot towards Cronin that the goalie kicked into the slot. Bruneteau collected the puck in stride and put back the open rebound at 6:58.

Bowdoin looked to even the score at the midway point of the period as Matthew Lison's wrister floated up on Hamilton goaltender Evan Buitenhuis '18 and hit him at an awkward angle. Buitenhuis poked the puck out of trouble to prevent a play on the rebound.

Chris Wallace evened the score for Bowdoin during four-on-four action three minutes into the second. Wallace scooped up the puck at the top of the left circle and flipped a quick shot past Buitenhuis for the equalizer.

With five minutes remaining in the period, Hamilton forced the Polar Bear defense to scramble. Brad Smelstor '17 -- who picked up his sixth assist on Bruneteau's goal -- capped the flurry of activity with an open look skating around the left post. As he was about to deposit the puck, Sam Topham slid in from behind to deny Smelstor.

Cronin finished with 40 saves, making 22 in the opening period. Buitenhuis earned the win with 29 stops.

The Continentals make their final road trip of the regular season this weekend, visiting Connecticut College Friday and Tufts Saturday. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. and Saturday is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
